The cave opening looms ahead, taunting me into trudging into the unknown. Darkness seeps out, making the afternoon sun seem darker than it really is. I grip my stone sword tighter.
"This is it, boys," Ungrth says, leaning against the hilt of his sword while the stone blade digs into the dirt at his feet.
"About dang time," Dmitri comments, wiping off his dagger and slinging it into a strap on his leg. We've been hanging out with Dmitri a bit since the fight a week or two back and kind of just accepted him as part of the group at this point. He's not a bad fighter.
"You're telling me," I agree. "I've been waiting too long for this."
Ungrth chuckles: "Always climbing the ranks. Typical Raven."
"Someone needs to be tough enough to save you when you inevitably get into trouble."
"He's got a point, Ungrth."
"I'm not that reckless."
Dmitri and I both look at him.
"Alright, fine. Point taken."
I smirk: "Thought so, now enough standing around. We've got a boss to fight."
"Yes, sir!" Ungrth mock salutes.
"On your command, general!" Dmitri follows suit, both trying not to laugh. I roll my eyes.
"You two drive me nuts." I shake my head. "Come on."
I lead the way inside and they follow, giggling like children. Their personalities are so alike, especially when it comes to causing trouble or teasing.
"I hope you both get jumped by spiders," I mutter.
"A fate worse than death!"
"How could you bare life without us?!"
"I'd manage."
"No, you wouldn't!" Ungrth nudges me in the side. "Let's get to the boss room already!"
"Who's the impatient one now?" I tease and he sticks his tongue out.
"Come on, children!" Dmitri runs ahead. "Last one there's a shadow knight!"
"No fair!" Ungrth chases after him. I roll my eyes for what feels like the tenth time today.
'They're gonna get themselves killed.' I mentally sigh before following after them.
-----Time Skip-----
Ten foot high brass doors stand tall in front of me. Light bounces off them from the two torches on either side, lighting up the small area around it. The rest of the cave is dark, so seeing light for the first time in almost thirty minutes makes me squint.
I hear footsteps from behind me, but before I can react, Dmitri falls on his knees, panting heavily. I lower my guard.
"Beat...him...whew..." He wipes sweat from his brow as Ungrth soon shows up behind him, panting as well.
"You tripped me." He smacks the back of Dmitri's head. "Jerk."
"There were no rules against it." Dmitri shrugs.
"Guess you're the shadow knight, Ungrth," I joke and he glares at me.
"Not my fault you left all the monsters for us to take care of."
