SIXTEEN CASUAL COMPLICATIONS

AN HOUR HAD PASSED SINCE DYLAN AND TYLER HAD SEPARATED, with Tyler now attracting a lot of attention from his humorous and natural charisma. He was still with Miley and the people that she had introduced him to, with many more faces circling and talking to him. Dylan was also finally becoming sociable, taking his best friend's advice to approach one of the many girls that had been giving him attention and indulging in conversation with many more individuals than he had cared to just an hour prior. He found himself enjoying the company of the girl in front of him; she was attractive and the conversation seemed to be flowing naturally since he'd approached her.

Elsewhere, just as Kayley was making her way to converse with friends she hadn't yet spoken to, the brunette felt a hand touch her shoulder. When the girl turned around she immediately wished she hadn't. Standing there, with his hair perfectly styled and a top that showed off his impressive biceps, was the beautiful face that Kayley had once fallen in love with.

"Can we talk?" Jace's voice was calm, almost sad.

"Do you think I want to talk to you?"

"I can see you'd rather talk to Jonas." His words were dripping with jealousy. When Kayley raised her eyebrows, the pop star knew he wasn't helping his case. The boy sighed. "Please, just a word."

"How about I give you three? Go fuck yourself." Kayley went to walk past him before Jace took a hold of her upper arm and turned her around. "You want to let go."

"Please. Give me five minutes and I promise if you still don't want to speak to me then I won't bother you again."

Seeing the sincerity in his eyes and also wanting nothing more than to not be disturbed by the boy for the rest of the night - and also the rest of her life - she gave in. "You've got two." They both walked away from everybody else, down the steps at the back of the garden where the music was quieter and where nobody could hear them.

"Look, I'm sorry. I'm sorry for everything. I was a dick to you. But I've changed. I don't want to be that guy anymore, I want to be with you." Jace stepped closer to the brunette. "I still love you." It was true that Jace loved the girl, that since they were three and playing in sandboxes he always had. But it was also true that he was young, reckless, immature and too swept up in fame and female attention to be in a relationship - even if it was with Kayley.

Kayley took a step back after she realised why she'd broken up with him. "You were my best friend Jace. You were the boy I'd go to when other boys had hurt me. You were the person that said you would never hurt me, the person that I always felt safe around. But you're the person that hurt me most, even when, even when you knew–" The girl stopped herself before she could start crying, because she knew she would if she carried on.
