"But I'm not actually related to him," Ruth quickly added. "I was adopted when I was three by his aunt and uncle."I removed the now barely cold soda can from my thigh and opened it. After taking a long sip I finally said: "Well, I'm sorry your cousin's a man whore."
"The worst part is that I have to see that idiot every time when my mom invites Eric's mom and dad for dinner. Which is every Saturday," she complained. "So last week he brought a girl with him and they were basically swallowing each others faces when I was trying to enjoy my aunt Morgan's pie."
I made a face.
"That poor, poor pie. Did you cover its eyes?"
"Unfortunately no, I was busy stuffing my face with it, but I'll try to protect it from inappropriate images the next time."
We both burst out into laughter.

I lied down on my bed and put my hands behind my head. It had been a long day and the only thing I wanted was to relax. I closed my eyes and ignored the pile of homework my teachers had given me earlier that day.
My mind went to Jamie, he had been my best friend at my last school and he was also the reason why we left.
Jamie was the one who introduced me to cigarettes and alcohol. We would always smoke at the park near school or share a beer and watch the sunset from his balcony. He and his friends always took care of me and they always made me happy.
Mom was pissed when she found out. She had returned a day earlier than expected. Just in time to see me come home, wasted from a party
She immediately arranged for us to move to this town and forced me to go to AA meetings for teens, during summer break.
I sighed and got up not wanting to continue thinking about that witch. The only thing I had kept from that experience was my bad habit of smoking.
I walked to the swing in my backyard and sat down. Taking the pack of cigarettes out of my pocket and lighting one. It felt familiar and immediately calmed me down. I took a puff and slowly started to swing back and forth while watching the sun go down.
Just like I used to do with Jamie.
