That evening after classes had ended, Malia, Kira, and Taryn all joined together on the bleachers to watch Scott and Stiles practice for their placement for the lacrosse team. Malia was sitting right beside Taryn with her math book opened across both her and Taryn's lap. The two were supposed to be focusing on the math homework, but Taryn was growing too distracted with what was happening on the field to focus and Malia was growing agitated from the smell of anxiety radiating off the kitsune to her right.
"You reek of anxiety and it's distracting."
For a moment Taryn had thought Malia was speaking to her, but quickly realized it was directed towards Kira after the girl let out a nervous laugh.
"What?" She breathed out. "Me? No."
Malia blinked and gave her friend an unamused look. "What's wrong with you?"
Taryn looked over the werecoyotes shoulder at Kira. "Scott and I sort of had this thing happen. But it wasn't much of a thing. And I'm starting to think it never was anything at all."
The disappointed look on Kira's face had Taryn raise a brow. She didn't quite understand why the two weren't dating already because from the way they act around each other, they already seemed like a couple (excluding kissing and such, but Taryn didn't define those as what made a relationship).
"What do you want it to be?" Malia asked.
Kira rested her chin on the lacrosse stick she had. "More."
Taryn shook her head, she knew both teenagers wanted that, so it was hard to process why they weren't talking to one another about it. She didn't know what had happened between them today, but she hoped they would sort it out because she cared for them both and wanted the best for them.
Taryn turned around to the field once more after hearing laughter. She noticed the boys lined up facing the goalies net and Stiles was at the front. Taryn noticed the goalie had the lacrosse ball rested in the netting of the stick and she knew the Stilinski had failed at what he was practicing at. Despite the failure, she couldn't help but allow a smile to slip onto her lips, but as the boy turned to see if Taryn had watched his embarrassment, she lowered her head and pretended to be reading from Malia's math book.
"Yes!"
Taryn again focused on the field as the coach cheered, along with the try-out team. She saw a young boy grinning as he made his way back to the end of the line. Scott traded spots with him and picked a ball up into his net and flung it towards the goal.
Ding!
Taryn covered her face as the ball bounced off the metal of the goal. She heard the team laughing and sending the McCall boy little jokes. She lowered her hands once the laughter ended and decided to try and focus on the homework Malia was actually trying to work on. However, she continuously looked away whenever she heard laughter or cheering, and she quickly realized the cheering was for the young boy from earlier and the laughter was for her two male friends.
"Isn't the captain supposed to be one of the best players on the team?" Malia asked after the fifth fail from Scott. "Or good?"
Taryn glanced back at the field, seeing the aggravated stance and expression that was taking over Scott's body. She didn't quite understand what was happening, either. "It's weird, sometimes during the weekend he'd have me toss him some balls to catch and he'd always catch them. It's hard for me to believe he wouldn't be able to throw them."
Malia and Kira watched Taryn for a moment, before looking to their two friends. Stiles had pulled aside Scott to talk with him. It was concerning, to say the least, seeing how terrible their friends were doing during this crucial try-out.
