Soumya slowly walked the steps to the third floor, where her biological mother lived apparently. She could have taken the lift, but she felt like she needed to gather up courage to meet her mother, so she slowly climbed the stairs to calm her mind.
Flat number 305. The apartment building had obviously seen better days. The place was old and Soumya had a nudging feeling, that it might see a demolition order in the next five years. She took a deep breadth, and rang the doorbell.
No response. Soumya waited for five more minutes, and rang the doorbell again.
This time she could feel shuffling feet, and a few seconds later, a lady opened the door.
"Are you....?" Soumya was about to ask.
"No, I am not the resident of this flat. I am house-help-cum-nurse. You are?" asked the middle-aged lady suspiciously.
"I am Soumya T..., umm, just Soumya. I have come to meet the lady who lives in this flat. I heard she shifted here only last month?" asked Soumya.
"Yes, she did. Nobody comes to visit her apart from her daughter, sometimes" the lady gave a once-over and decided that probably she was alright. "All right, you wait here, I will go and call Madam" and beckoned Soumya inside the living room.
Soumya went and sat down on the sofa. Like everything else in the apartment building, the furniture had also seen better days. Soumya didn't want to judge, but was her parent going through some financial difficulty? Could be, since she almost literally gave away her daughter to a nurse.
It was only a one room flat, so Soumya wondered why it was taking so long for her parent to come? She was getting jittery due to this wait.
Just as she thought this, she heard footsteps. Soumya composed herself, and looked up to see..
"Mrs Kapoor?" exclaimed Soumya, flabbergasted.
"Soumya?" replied Mrs. Kapoor, equally dumbstruck. She knew the girl, but she had hardly interacted with her in the Oberoi mansion, when she and her daughter, Tia, were trying to con Shivaay and his family. Tia had some sort of friendship, more likely cordiality, with this girl. But she didn't know much about this girl, except that she was Kalyani ji's friend's granddaughter who had come to live with them, from Pune.
"Why have you come here?" asked Mrs.Kapoor, rudely. She didn't need to be cordial to any friend of the Oberois.
This can't be right, thought Soumya. Mrs. Kapoor was Tia's mother, and moreover didn't Bade bhaiyaa put her in jail, for conning his family, though he forgave Tia.
"You are out of prison" said Soumya.
"Yes, so? Tia, my useless daughter, did one good thing, and interceded to Shivaay on my behalf. He got me released a month back, discharged from the fraud charges" said Mrs. Kapoor. "Now, what are you doing here?"
"I....I...umm...did you ever go to St. Mary's hospital in Kandivalli.....for delivering a baby?" asked Soumya, haltingly.
Mrs. Kapoor's expression changed rapidly from rudeness to confusion to desperation. "You...you know something about that baby? You know the nurse who I gave the baby to...I remember her name, wait, Talpade, no, T...yes, Tendulkar, do you know her? Or do you have any information on my baby?" asked Mrs.Kapoor.
"Funny, you never tried to find her before" said Soumya, scathingly, getting up from the sofa.
"I....I couldn't take care of her that time...I lost my husband, and I had two daughters to think of. Some years later, when I was able, I tried to find her, but that nurse had transferred from that hospital, to god knows where, and then through the years I have tried to find her, but..." Mrs. Kapoor chocked.
