Zara chuckled at her screen.

"Zara," Kelsey plopped onto her unmade bed with a mischievous grin.

"Yeah?" Zara looked up from her phone with a smile, "why are you smiling like that?"

"Why are you smiling like that?" Kelsey interrogated.

Zara stole a glance back down at her phone, Jax was typing.
"I wasn't smiling."

"Does you smiling at your phone have anything to do with Jax staring at you during lunch?"  Kelsey asked with a curious look in her eye.

Zara rolled her eyes.

"It's a diffferent boy? Oh, she got hoes-"

"Alright, alright, alright!" Zara interrupted.

"Seriously," Kelsey pursued, "because usually you're the one making other people laugh and now it's the other way around."

"If I tell you, you'll make it into a thing," Zara rolled her eyes as she hinted.

"Okay, so don't turn you and Jax texting into a thing. Got it." Kelsey nodded her head.

Zara rolled her eyes once again.
"So when did you guys-" Kelsey stopped herself, "become friends?"

"I went to the store to get some snacks and he was there and I was trying to get outta there fast and had accidentally left my change in the thing," Zara retold the story of their encounter.

"And then I saw he was tearing up. So I hugged him."

"Hugged him? Who? You? Zara Brown, lil' ole' Zara who's afraid of physical contact?"

"Shut up," Zara rolled her eyes.
"It was weird seeing a boy cry because of me, it's usually the other way around."

"Zara's finally getting some play!" Kelsey clapped.

"See, that's the last time I tell you anything," Zara pointed at Kelsey and sucked her teeth.

She drew her attention back to her screen.
Her last message stared back at her, mocking her.
He was just typing.
He's probably bored by now.

Jax banged his phone against his forehead.
He typed 'i'm a mess for you' but had quickly backspaced the text.

Imagine if I had actually sent it.

Too risky.
What if I had accidentally sent it?

I wish I could just send it.
But that would complicate things.
'Cause friends don't say that stuff to each other.
