Chapter 12

Liam groaned, “Alex!” He jogged back to her room. Alex looked up, pain and tears in her eyes, “Just a friend huh?”

“Baby, that was nothing..she-” Alex rolled her eyes. “ I don’t want to hear excuses, it’s obvious you still have feelings for this woman. I for one will never be second best..so leave.” She hissed the last few words and crossed her arms, tears silently falling from her pain-filled eyes. Liam hung his head, “Baby..please”

“No! I told you when we were dating, I would never be second best and I asked you...I ASKED you if you were running from something in your past. That I didn’t want any skeletons in your closet. Why in the world..no..leave Liam. Now and take your despicable mother and Kimberly with you.” Alex furiously wiped away tears and turned away from him. Liam sighed and left, stumbling to the waiting room. Ada looked up, “Well?” Liam’s eyes welled with tears, “She told me to leave..and take you and Kimberly with me..” Robert’s eyes widened and he choked back a chuckle. “I’ll stay. Ada, Kimberly. Leave. You too Liam.” Liam nodded and walked out the door. Ada glared at her husband and yanked on Kimberly’s arm, “Come darling.” Robert shook his head and headed down the hall, towards Alex’s room. He knocked on the door and walked in, smiling. “Hello dear.” Alex looked up and the tears came. She leaned forward as sobs wracked her frame. Robert sat on the bed and gathered her in his arms, “Oh honey..cry it out. It’ll be ok.” Alex laid her head on his shoulder and sighed after most of the sobs had quieted. Robert looked into her eyes and patted her shoulder, “I’m so sorry for your loss Alexandra. Ever since you became Liam’s wife.. I watched him change into the happiest man. You are the daughter I never had and I was so happy for you two..now with Kimberly back in the picture, especially now with the baby..it’s brought so many issues in your marriage. My dear, you need to pray. You need to think about what has happened and pour your heart to the Lord. Some time apart might be good for you.. God only knows.” Alex glanced into his face, nodding slowly. “The doctor said that I can go home in a couple days..they just want to monitor..the baby.” Alex choked up and took a deep breath. “ I would greatly appreciate if you could tell Liam to come back in three hours. After I take a nap.” Robert nodded and turned to the door, “I’m very sorry about Ada..I’ll talk to her don’t you worry.” Alex gave a weak smile and waved, “Goodbye and thank you.” She laid down and placed a shaking hand on her belly, tears seeping through her closed eyes. Finally, she opened them and hiccupped, sobbing. She sat up and buried her face in her hands, unable to stop. Hearing a knock on the door, she quickly wiped her eyes, eyes looking around frantically. She coughed and spoke, “Come in.” She put on a smile, then gasped, “Liam! What..what are you doing here? It’s been barely forty-five minutes.” Liam gave a wry smile, “I couldn’t let my wife go through the loss of our baby by herself. I came at the right time..looks like you could use a hug.” Alex’s face crumpled and she started sobbing once again, reaching towards Liam. Liam rushed towards her. “Oh honey...honey! Baby it’s okay.” He pulled her in his arms and laid on the bed beside her. Shaking, she crawled on his lap and curled up in his arms. “I’m so sorry about the baby… It’s all my fault! I shouldn’t have let your mom get under my skin!” Sobbing, she blubbered and Liam sighed. Heart aching, he watched her scrub her face and look at him, tears falling from her big, brown, and puffy eyes. Sniffing, he crushed her close. “Don’t say that ok?! I could’ve...I could’ve lost you. I’m so sad about the baby, but it isn’t your fault and God knows I couldn’t lose you.” Alex looked up and him and sniffed, lifting a shaking hand and wiping his tears. “But you didn’t.” Liam nodded, and hugged her close. Alex sighed and closed her eyes. Liam kissed her hair and slowly the couple fell asleep.

    The next morning, Liam yawned and reached for Alex. She turned and murmured, “Get me a bowl..I’m gonna puke.” Liam scrambled around the room and found the garbage can. Alex turned away and threw up. Moaning, she lay down and flung an arm over her eyes. Liam called for a nurse and sat on the bottom of her bed, rubbing her leg. “Are you alright?” The nurse entered and smiled, “Hello Mrs. Peterson..how are you feeling?” Alex looked up and sighed, shrugging. “Nauseous..still very sad.” She bit her lip and looked down. Liam turned to the nurse and gave her a smile, while passing the garbage can. “Could you bring her some breakfast please? She’s still quite emotional about the miscarriage of the twin.” The nurse smiled understandingly, “Oh of course! Don’t you worry beautiful. The baby you still have will be simply marvelous. Not replacing the baby you don’t have, but filling your heart with love for this baby.” She placed the garbage can on the ground and squeezed Alex’s shoulder comfortingly. “Well, I’ll be back soon.” She closed the door quietly. Liam turned to Alex, “Have you told Caroline about the baby?” Alex looked up quickly, with a look of dismal acceptance. “No. I’m going to call her in a few minutes to tell her.” Sighing, she laid back down and whispered, “I have to tell my family...please.. Can you tell them?” Liam rubbed her thigh, “Of course sweetheart.” He picked up his phone and called Georgia and Levi. He smiled when he heard Georgia’s voice and then sighed, “Hi Georgia.”

“Hello Liam! How are you, Alex and the babies??”

“Georgia..we’re at the hospital..Alex lost one of the babies.” A sob escaped Alex’s tight lips and I sat on the bed next to her, rubbing her thigh. “Oh Liam! I’m so sorry..how’s my babygirl? Do you know why?” Liam kissed Alex and spoke, “She’s..she’s hanging in there for the other baby...we wish you were here with us. My parents? Oh yes, I’m sure they’d have room for you.”  Alex looked up, hopeful. Liam gave her a smile and a wink.
