I determined this was the end of my Selection. After this trip, I would eliminate Adim. Then Chaarlie then Tyrion. I would ask Shaan to marry me. Hopefully he would say yes. Shaan as my husband. That would be the dream. I couldn't believe it was possible.
He was exactly what I needed, a figment of my imagination. Now I had to do the hardest thing: tell him and pray that he said that magical word.
“Can I sit with you?” Shaan was seated in the back of the plane, reclining. He nodded, moving his jacket off of his adjacent chair.
“Of course,” he replied.
“You excited?” I asked, fighting the flurry of nerves on my stomach. I was already not the biggest fan of planes and sitting next to Shaan was not making it better.
“Yeah,” he said slowly, eyeing me through his peripheral. “Are you okay?”
“No, I love you,” I blurted quietly. My eyes probably enlarged to fill up half of my face, I was flipping out. He was going to say he takes his I love you back. Oh, I could tell by his face. He was going to say he takes it back. “I-”
He cut of my words with his lips, rupturing them with unbridled passion. He pushed the armrest up, still kissing me, and pulled me closer to him. Our lips broke apart, our breaths heavy.
“Do you still love me?” I whispered. I didn't know why I was so afraid of that. Maybe because I was the future queen and sometimes people just told me what I wanted to hear because of it. All my life, I had been treated like training wheels on a bicycle. What if I really couldn't bike alone, without the titles, without the money, just as Kerttu. What would happen?
“How could I not? You are the funniest, most amazing person in the world.” He chuckled, rubbing his rectangular chin. “You've made me a better person with your energy, your personality. There is no one like you, Kerttu, no one.”
“There's no one like you,” I muttered, rubbing his face with my hands. He was mine. He was really mine. “You are like a butterfly. You are hard to catch, to understand at first. But you are so loving, caring.”
“I tried to run because I was afraid of what a life with you would be like. I knew it would be rocky, crazy, exciting, exhilarating, sad. It would be life. It would be perfect. You're perfect.”
“I'm sorry for making you go through this Selection like this. I was just so afraid of perfection.”
I finally moved my eyes from the chair in front of us to him. He was holding back tears.
“I love you,” he said, making the world shimmer with utter bliss. He embraced me again, my head on his shoulder, looking out the plane window. No matter what happened, I would be with him. And that's all that mattered.
**Sherttu. Thoughts?**
