Nurse Jessica was getting the stuff ready to give Mia her IV. Mia, on the other hand, began to act a little uneasy. Yugi wrapped his arm around her shoulders. Jessica stood next to Mia ready to help her through getting her IV needle. Jessica began setting the equipment on the small table by the bed.
"So I'll be doing the IV on your left arm since I have been told that you are right-handed. I'm not going to be bringing out any needles just yet. So you just relax for me okay, babe?"
"Okay,".
"Alright. I'm going to place this small, plastic cover down on the bed where I'll have you put your arm," she helped guide Mia's arm over to where she needed it, "there you go, great start already. When I first stick the needle in there at first there might be just a couple drops of blood. So that's what this is for so that the sheets don't become messy. Do you want a pillow to help support and relax your arm on?"
"Yeah,".
"Okay,". Jessica got a small pillow from the cabinet.
"Just give me your arm,". Mia lifted up her arm. Jessica kindly grabbed it and lay it on the small covering that was put over the pillow.
"Okay. The next thing I want to do is just take a good look at the veins in your arm. I'm going to put on this tourniquet right here around your arm. That's what's gonna help me see the veins. It's gonna be a little tight, it'll give your arm a little squeeze but I'll be very gentle, okay?"
"Okay,".
"Okay, just relax your arm,". Jessica began to tie the tourniquet over her arm.
"And...now this is gonna be tight, okay?" Jessica finished the tie.
"Is that too tight?"
"No," answered Mia, "it's okay,".
"Okay, good. That's what I wanna hear. Now I'm just gonna take a good look at your veins and see where the best place would be to stick the IV in,". Jessica began to feel and tap her veins down from her hand up to her arm.
"Wow, you've got some good veins, girl," said Jessica, trying to keep her encouraged, "I've got plenty of places to choose from. But..." Jessica thought for a moment, "I think the best place would be right here just above your wrist, babe,". She took off the tourniquet from her arm.
"I'm going to take this off for just a minute. Now we're just going to give you some of this anesthesia ointment and put just a small amount over where the needle will be placed. The ointment won't make the pain go away completely but it will numb it for you a little bit so it doesn't hurt as bad, okay, sweetie?". Lisa opened the ointment and put a small amount over her wrist where the needle would be inserted.
"So I'm just going to leave that there for about 30 minutes. Then I'll be able to start the IV, okay?"
"Okay,".
"Alright, are you feeling okay?"
"I feel scared,".
"Yeah, I know you are scared, but that's okay. Everyone gets scared sometimes,".
"Even I get scared sometimes," Yugi put in, "now I can't remember the last time I had been actually scared about something rather than only nervous. But tonight I got pretty scared, Mia. I had thought I was gonna lose you already. But now you're okay. And you'll be able to go back home again in the next couple days, where you belong,". Mia smiled at Yugi. She then pulled something out of her pocket. It was Yugi's Dark Magician card he gave to her before he left to go get Joey and Tea.
"Here's your card back, Yugi,". Yugi chuckled, taking the card from Mia's hand.
"Thanks, Mia,".
