“Man, did you see the way that one interviewer kept looking at you, Luke? It was so…desperate,” I hear Calum’s high voice sound out, quickly followed by the slamming of the tour bus door. After about 6 hours of interviews, they’re finally back. And I don’t know if I’m relieved or not considering I’ve been holed up in the bathroom for a good part of that time, wondering why I’m still here-waiting around for someone to care about me.
“Yeah, it was hilarious. I don’t get it; like why even take it that far?” I hear Luke’s chipper voice reply with a chuckle. He acts like it was entirely her fault; like he didn’t flirt right back with her.
“Well, it takes two to tango,” I hear Ashton’s voice, and it doesn’t seem very pleasant.
“And what the hell is that supposed to mean?” The frustration is clear in Luke’s voice as he responds to Ashton. Footsteps sound throughout the small space.
“It means… you weren’t exactly Mr. Innocent out there. What, you don’t remember Luci?” Ashton spits. “The girl you brought on tour with you, who, despite whatever the hell you said back there, is actually your girlfriend.”
“Listen mate, I don’t want to fight with you. But I’m only gonna say this once. What I have with Luci is my business, so stay the fu--”
“Lads, lads. Calm down. No point in letting a chick come between you. Especially that one,” he says, but it’s loud enough for me to hear. Again, I don’t understand why I don’t just return to New York, to the streets. Clearly, one of them wants me here, the other doesn’t, and the other could care less. And as far as Luke is concerned, I don’t know which category he belongs in.
“And the same goes for you, Mikey. Luci is my business.”
The footsteps come closer; he must not be too far from the bathroom now.
“Luci?” I don’t answer as Luke calls out. I don’t want to see him right now. If he doesn’t take us seriously, then why should I?
“Luci, where are you?” I hear his voice growing more agitated, but I still don’t answer.
"F*ck,” he mutters, probably running over the possibilities of where I could have gone.
He sighs and it goes quiet after a while, until I hear my phone begin to vibrate on the sink, loudly at that. And I still don’t answer it, even though I’m almost sure he’ll find me at some point. This place is only so big, and I left my bag and stuff out in the open anyway, so it’s not like I could have gone far.
My phone begins to flood with texts not too long after.
Luke
Baby?
Where are you?
I won’t get mad. Promise
He won’t get mad? He has no right to be mad. I should be the angry one-furious even.
I continue to sit in the bathroom, brooding over my thoughts until I hear footsteps approaching, stopping right in front of the door. That should be my cue to get up; but no.
It doesn’t matter if he tries to open it. I locked the door.
“Luci? Are you in there?” Luke questions, turning the door handle. “I know you are. I’m calling your phone and I hear it vibrating from out here.” He’s not lying about that; his name flashes continuously across the screen and the buzzing practically sounds like a chainsaw with the silence in this place.
“Come on, Luci. Open the door. Don’t make me come in there.” He can’t do that; can he? But before I have the chance to figure out whether or not he’s bluffing, the door clicks open and in walks Luke.
