Schizophrenia comes from Greek and consists of two words skhizein (splitting) and phren (memory). Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by impaired thought processes and weak emotional responses. This condition is generally manifested in the form of auditory, paranoid, or strange ideological hallucinations, or chaotic ways of speaking and thinking, and accompanied by significant social and work dysfunction.

Schizophrenia is a brain disease and is classified as a serious mental disorder. About 1% of the world population suffers from this disease. Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness. This disease is caused by a disruption of the concentration of brain neurotransmitters, changes in receptors of brain cells, and structural brain abnormalities, and not for psychological reasons. Patients will have abnormal thoughts, feelings, emotions, speech, and behavior, which affect life, work, social activities, and the ability to take care of themselves everyday. Some patients are vulnerable and try or commit suicide.

People can suffer from schizophrenia at various stages of age, but the symptoms of this disease usually appear in the age range of 20 to 30 years. The recurrence rate is very high if no appropriate treatment and treatment is taken. Patients usually show early symptoms when they are young, but this disease can occur at any age level and affects both men and women with the same level of risk.

Many people misunderstand schizophrenic patients. They are considered to have multiple personalities, when in fact this disease affects their emotions, perceptions, and thoughts, which causes abnormal behavior with a single personality. Schizophrenia can be treated, but this disease has a high recurrence rate. The faster it is detected and treated, the better the prognosis for recovery.

Early symptoms usually appear during young adults, with prevalence during life globally around 0.3% -7.7%. Diagnosis is based on observing the behavior and experience of the person being reported.

Important contributing factors are genetics, initial environment, neurobiology, and psychological conditions, and social processes; some types of prescription and recreational drugs can seem to be causes or conditions that worsen symptoms. Current research focuses on the role of neurobiology even though no specific organic cause has been found. Various combinations of symptoms that may occur have triggered a debate over whether a diagnosis represents one abnormality or several different symptoms.

Apart from the etymology of the term derived from Greek, schizophrenia is not the same as 'split memories' and is not the same as dissociative identifas disorder, also known as 'multiple personality disorder' or 'split personality' - a condition that is often confused according to the perception of the wider community.
Mainstay treatment is treatment with antipsychotics which generally suppress dopamine activity (and sometimes serotonin). Psychotherapy and vocational and social rehabilitation are also important treatments. In more serious cases involving risks for themselves and others, it is necessary to do forced hospital treatment, although the length of hospital treatment is now shorter and not as often as before.

Several famous artists were diagnosed with schizophrenia and lived with schizophrenia. One of the most famous painters with schizophrenia is Louis Wain.
