I tried not to close my eyes
I know that once I do, they will come.
They always do when I least expect.
They wait for the perfect opportunity to act on my vulnerability.
I felt their heat and I clicked the lights on
Hoping to scare them away
But they are still here
Waiting for me to fall asleep.
I feel them hovering
Though I can't see them
These creatures of the night
I know they are watching
Waiting for me to drift into unconsciousness.
I won't let them overtake me
Not this time
I'm stronger now
I will fight
Even if it means staying awake
