Allen was sitting in the living room sobbing like a baby and opened another bottle of whiskey to drown his sorrows with and numb out the pain he was feeling. He was sitting there for a while and drank half the bottle of whiskey when he took his car keys and left the house. He doesn't know how he managed to, but a while later he stopped in front of the house Veronique once shared with her late husband and parked his Volkswagen in the driveway behind Veronique's car. He got out and stumbled up to the front door before he rang the bell. Moments later Veronique who was already dressed in her pajamas opened the door to find Allen outside, unable to stand on his feet. "Geez Allen, it's the middle of the night. What are you doing at my place so late?" He just kept staring at he unable to speak so she stepped out of the way to let him inside and closed the door behind her. "Allen, it's not a good time for you to come here now. What's going on? Did you and Alicia fight?"
"She...She's dead."
Veronique stared at Allen shocked, unable to take in what he just said and almost couldn't speak herself. "What?"
"She's dead."
"Oh God." Veronique opened her arms to give Allen a comforting hug and he broke down crying completely. "Where's Michelle?"
"She's with her mother in Vancouver."
"And the baby?"
"She's at home."
Veronique pushed Allen away and then looked at him upset. "What? Have you lost your mind Allen Chase?"
"Please... Veronique..."
"Your wife is dead and you left your baby daughter at home alone?"
"I..."
"Oh my gosh. How did you get here?"
"My car is outside," Allen replied through the sobs.
"You drove here?" Veronique asked alarmed. "Oh no. I'm taking you home Allen. Give me your car keys."
"Veronique, don't."
"Don't tell me to don't Allen. I'm getting Julia and I'm taking you home. Even if it means I have to sleep on your damn living room couch, but you cannot leave your baby girl at home alone and drop by my house wasted."
******
Allen was already passed out on his bed when Veronique tucked Julia in. "Mommy, why is Allen crying?"
"Because he's sad honey."
"Why?"
"Sometimes bad things happen that make us sad and then we cry because it makes us feel better."
"Did you cry when daddy died?"
"Yeah, I did."
"I miss daddy."
