I stayed by Sami until she woke up. It was late at night before she even showed signs of being awake.
The first sign was her breathing getting manual. The second were occasional twitches. By this time I was wide awake, willing her silently to open her eyes.
I promised you would be unkillable, so now you have to be.
Finally after at least half an hour, Sami's eyes open slowly. She almost immediately jolted up, causing her wound to hurt again. She breathed heavily, putting her hands over where she had been shot.
"Thank God" I said, looking at her "please, don't scare me like that again".
Sami flinched slightly, looking over at me. She must not have noticed I was there, but it was pretty clear to see I was the last person she wanted to see.
"Lay back down" I said, standing up and easing her into her back "you're on Codeine, so you'll probably feel tired"
Sami didn't protest, staying still. She eventually opened her mouth, thinking for a moment before murmuring "why.."
I sat back down, looking at her "be more specific. Why were you shot or why did I help?"
"Why.. did you help" Sami said, turning her head to the side so she was looking at me "I should be disposable to you, right?"
Absolutely not.
"No, you're not" I said, sighing. Was I really going to open up to her? I suppose I didn't have much of a choice. "You're.. different, to me at least" I said slowly, making sure to use the right words "I promised you would be unkillable, didn't I?"
Sami blinked for a moment, looking at me "yeah.." she murmured quietly.
Stop it. Stop looking at me like that.
Fuck it. Everyone else is asleep, there's no better time, right? "Sami, there's a reason I followed you to your apartment. There's a reason I brought you here. I'll be damned if you getting shot ruins it". Why can't I say it?
"What.. what is it?" Sami asked after a moment, slightly worried. Her eyes were almost glazed over from the drugs.
"I want you to trust me" I said, keeping eye contact "That's all I want. I want you to trust me enough to be able to relax around me".
"Why do you want.. my trust?" Sami asked quietly, looking at me. I could feel her getting more tired. Please don't fall asleep before I finish talking, please.
"Because it's one of the two things you can't force. Trust and respect. You have to trust someone before you respect them, so I want your trust" I said, almost rushing so she wouldn't slip into subconsciousness.
Sami looked away for a moment "so what should I call you.." she murmured "I know your name off the news, but.. just tell me what to call you".
"Sarah" I said calmly "just Sarah".
