And so over the next week, Sami reluctantly started calling me by my name. She still didn't like looking at me either, and it was almost starting to get on my nerves. Was I really that scary? I mean, yes, I suppose I could be scary, but I hadn't been to her, so what's the problem?

She confused me. What did I need for her to trust me? Fuck it. I can do what I want, right?

"Sami" I said, turning off my computer. We were in my office, Sami sitting across from me quietly.

"Huh?" she murmured quietly, flinching slightly and glancing at me before looking away from me again. Great.

I stood up "have you ever been to the beach?" I asked, looking down at her.

"I don't think so.." Sami murmured "Maybe when I was little, but I don't remember".

Not entirely surprising. The closest beach was a couple hours away, and based on where Sami lived, I doubted she had the time or money to spend a day at the beach. "I think it's time for that to change" I said, smiling slightly.

Sami blinked, looking up at me "really?" she asked, a hint of excitement in her expression.

"Of course" I smiled, looking down at her "I don't have any business today"

In all honesty, I was never a fan of beaches. The water was far too cold and the sand would get everywhere. But the look Sami gave me immediately made it worth it. I wanted her to look at me like that more.

I walked out with Sami, staying quiet. Even going at ninety, the drive would take more than an hour. Eventually she'd have to look at me, right? I'm really not that bad.

I sat down in the driver's seat, Sami quietly sitting down next to me. I felt like we were strangers, and I didn't like it. Why wouldn't she put her guard down around me?

I started driving, keeping my eyes ahead. "So do you have any family around here?" I eventually asked, breaking the silence.

Sami stayed quiet for a bit, fiddling nervously with her hands "no" she eventually murmured "they moved away a while ago".

"And left you here?" I asked, looking at her for a moment "that's a bit of a dick move, don't you think?"

Sami quickly shook her head "no- of course not! I.. I wanted to stay here" she said, getting quieter as she talked "I didn't want to leave my job.. and.."

After a moment of silence, I said "and?"

"And.. I have friends here" she said quietly, looking down and fidgeting with her hands "but.. I guess that doesn't matter now, right?" she smiled slightly, but it was empty.

I looked at Sami for a moment "of course it matters" I said after a moment. Was i really going to do this? If she can see her friends, she might call the police. No. You are above the law, Sarah. Remember that. "I'll let you see them later".
