The wings of a butterfly are so delicate, that when you look at them you might think the littlest touch will turn them into dust.
I look at a dead and trampled butterfly as it lays on the ground. Such a majestic thing, destroyed in an instant. Like this world.
I go to the library, I haven't read in a while and there is a certain subject that I have been pondering. Why is water clear? The answer to such question can only be found in a book. So in a book I will find it. As I start to make my way to the library I see in the distant someone running towards me. I stop and let my eyes zoom in, it's George and Layla, but why are they here? And where's Mimi? When they get to me they are breathing heavily, gasping for air. "Layla, George wh-"
"Mimi's gone." George gasps out. My eyes widen, then in sudden reality I look back towards my chambers. The base and my chambers are two different places. Each chamber can hold about ten of us and there are many of them scattered around the world, yet there is only one base in the middle of it all. That is the only place they would have brought her.
"I know where she is." I say. They both look at me with hope in their eyes.
"Where?" Layla asks.
"You have to go back to that cottage. I'll get Mimi."
"But where is she?" Layla demands.
"Hide, and be safe." I say before running in the opposite direction. I close my eyes and hope that Mimi is okay.
I have never been to the base before. Few of us have. So when I see the gigantic menacing building looming over head I am more then terrified. But I would do anything to save Mimi. So I continue walking, two guards stand at the door they look at me then say, "Go in." Ah yes, the cold hard welcome of an emotionless being. The door opens to a large and well illuminated room. And inside the room is a throne, a large chair with engravings on each side of spiraling shapes and figures. The armrests are a deep brown and at the front of both is a ball that serves no purpose. Such a beautiful thing I think shouldn't hold such a monster because in the chair sits the ruler, the "king". I look at him, and he looks at me. Then he stands and in his gray eyes I see, no it couldn't be, it's the same look that I have in my eyes, emotion. The man smiles, "You are correct, I do have emotion, not as much as a defect like you has but I have enough."
"Enough for what?" I spit out.
"Enough to rule, a leader without emotion is hardly worth following. But I don't have the petty and weak emotions of love or sympathy."
"Only an idiot calls love weak." I say my anger starting to bubble up.
"An idiot you say? I am the one who led us to victory! I am the one who got rid of those humans who wished to control us, they tried to make us human, but they can't."
"They why do you sit in a throne and claim yourself the king? Only humans do that."
"To make a statement, a statement saying that we may look like humans and even act like humans but we aren't, we are better. We won when humans only fought, they needed to be killed before they killed themselves."
"Yes humans are bad, they have killed thousands, but we have killed millions. They made us to help them, knowing that they couldn't do it alone."
"That is why they are weak, they should have fought their own battle!"
I want to run over to him, and rip his head off, but that wouldn't end well. So I straighten my posture and say, "I did not come here to quarrel."
He smiles, "No I believe you did not." He looks to the guard on his left. "Bring her out." He says. Inside a glass cage I see Mimi, hands pressed against the glass saying something, but I can't hear her. The guards look at her then place her down. "Ok, let's make a deal." He says, walking towards me. "Before you got possessed by those vermin you were a fine hunter. You killed many survivors, so I will let you live. If you kill that group of kids I will do nothing to you, but if you do not I will reboot you." A deal to either kill my friends or get rebooted. All my memories erased. I look down at Mimi, she stares at me expectantly, she believes that I will save her. And she is right, no matter what it takes, she will survive."I'm not going to kill my friends." I say. He sighs, as if he's disappointed. "But promise me, that you will not touch them ever again."
"I promise." He says.
The guards walk towards me, Mimi is scared, terrified. He better keep his promise, even if he doesn't, George will protect them. They open up the glass box and are about to grab Mimi when she bolts from them and wraps her arms around me. "Hannah!" She shouts. But they start to drag me away, I look at her, she's starting to cry. She tries to go to me but they hold her back. "Let me at least say goodbye." I say to the man.
"Fine." He replies.
When Mimi is let go she stumbles towards me, and the word that she shouts inside this room seems to echo and vibrate everywhere. "Mom!"
My eyes widen, she called me mom, why? Do I remind her of her mother? Could her mother have died?
"Mimi, I need you to go and tell George and Layla to run away. If you don't I might go after you, and kill you."
"What? No, I'm not leaving you again."
"Mimi, you have to. I don't want you to die. Think about George and Layla do you want them to die?"
"No!"
"Then you have to go."
"No!" She yells. Tears are streaming down her face now.
"Mimi, I don't know what happened to you mom. But she wanted to protect you. So do Layla and George. I know that she would want you to run." Her lips wobble.
"Please Mimi, for me, go." I whisper. She looks up at me, as the little clear pools slip down her cheeks. She takes her finger and slides it under her eyes, gathering tears. Then she reaches out and touches my lower eyelid. Letting the tears drip off her finger and onto my face, rolling down my cheeks. For the first time in my life I am crying. They roll down my face, and onto the floor. I close my eyes. "Thank you." I say quietly.
"That's enough." He says.
"You have to run." I say to Mimi.
She looks down then says, "Hannah, please don't forget me." Then she runs out of the building.
They take me to another part of the building and hook me up to a machine. All I feel as they do this is the tears. Rolling down my cheeks, yet they are starting to dry, when I wake up they will be gone and I won't remember them ever being there.
Death, is something I never thought about. We don't have to think about it, we barley ever die. We can live forever. That is what we were made for. But now, Hannah is going to die, her soul, her spirit and that look in her eyes. They are all going to be stripped from me, from her. Then what will I be? A power hungry being like the ruler. I won't feel, won't think, I won't see the blood on my hands just like everyone else. But at least those kids, George, Layla and Mimi, helped Hannah wipe off the blood on her hands. Maybe that's all that matters. And hopefully, they will escape, and I won't find them. And suddenly as they are about to turn on the machine and not only going to make me forget but also erase my emotion, I think about all those days that I was lost and all those days when I was scared. But now I have a family, and I can think of all those days when everything, was perfect.
