Trez, barley escaped the melee that erupted around him by climbing up onto the nearest bales of hay that lined one side of the barn. He had been forced to throw his backpack at a pair of girls who had attacked him after screaming obscenities at each other, something about teams and he didn't think they meant sports.
He wanted nothing to do with this freak show but found himself trapped on top of the hay, the same hay he had not long ago lay on, sweaty and sated on a hot summer day. It brought tears to his eyes as he watched the fights break out like a wave from one end of the room to the other. " This way. " It was Thane's voice that caught his attention. He sounded almost conspiratorial as the voice came again. " Come this way."
Still shaken, Trez scooted towards Thane's ghostly whisper and was surprised to see an open square door in the barn's wall. He vaguely remember that they sometimes would jump from this door into the back of Chester's truck, scaring the crap out of the old man as he pumped gas. He could have sworn that Chester had nailed it shut after the last jump, but there it was, open. Of course there was no truck to jump into this time, though, and when he landed he twisted his ankle but managed to stay upright. Free of the fighting, he limped around Winter Fire's van, headed towards the front of the barn.
" What the hell are you doing here? "
Trez's head snapped up, his blue eyes wide at the sight of the dark figure striding towards him. He raised his hands up and was shocked at the sight of Daniel's pale, bloody visage. He looked fierce and beautiful at the same time.
" I want to come with you," Trez stammered, breathless.
" You need to leave."
Daniel was shaking, his eyes fixed on the exposed skin of Trez's neck. His hunger gnawed and squirmed deep inside, forcing him to take a step back. He knew Trez's blood would be sweet, his skin soft and smelling of soap, his white blond hair baby fine between his fingers. " Go now! "
" Not without you and Zakk."
" Zakk." Daniel's voice was flat, emotionless. " Forget him and go."
Trez reached out a shaking hand, wanting to feel the cold skin under his fingertips and Daniel bared his teeth at him. Snow was catching in his bloody hair, on his eyelashes and bare chest.
" Stupid child." Daniel grabbed Trez's coat, yanking him forward, his breath stinking as he growled low and deep. Hunger shone in his hunger maddened eyes.
What saved Trez was nothing more than a pair of crying boys in baggy jeans and backwards caps, a pair of twins a year younger than Trez with a record a mile long. Gill and Gabe, running from the barn drew Daniel's attention away as they came to a screeching halt in front of them. Their fear scented the air, drawing a laugh from the vampire. He dropped Trez to the cold snow-covered ground. Grabbing a twin in each hand, he choked one as he bite the other, drenching them all in blood. Not wanting to see any more Trez scuttled backwards like a crab, as Daniel dropped Gill and sank his fangs into Gabe's throat. With tears blurring his vision, he jumped up, running blindly into the darkness.
He Had no idea where he was going. He was just running blindly towards the corn as he tried to leave the screaming behind. Ten feet into the tall cackling stalks and he was lost. He should have made sure to have a flashlight but that was in his backpack back at the barn. The sleet made it hard to see as he tried to find the path that would lead him out. He knew. If he kept walking he would eventually find a way out but he wanted to help people, not run away.
Spotting the light- tower, he found his bearings and headed for the path that should have been a few feet in front of him. Popping out of the corn he scared the crap out of a group of kids and workers, all of them wondering what was going on at the barn. Trez was about to tell them to stay put when Broken bloody form appeared before them. Everyone screamed and ran different directions leaving Trez alone with the Vampire. He wanted to run too but he knew that running was stupid.
" You want to die? " Broken moved slowly, almost teasingly. He knew the boy would come, had sensed it from the second he had tasted his blood. Oddly he wanted to scare him instead of tearing him apart, not to mention that Blaze had marked him as his own and as much as he wanted to tear Trez apart he couldn't. " Or are you here for something else? " Not that he couldn't have some. he was not allowed to kill him, nothing was said about hurting him.
Trez tried not to panic, tried to stay calm and failed. He had come to save Daniel and look how that turned out. " I came for Daniel but he made his choice. "
" He did and now you have a choice. Run and die or stand there and make it easy for me. "
He didn't have time to run before Broken had him pinned on the ground, his sharp nails ripping at the fabric of his shirt. Trez tried to raise his arms but the vampire held both wrists with one hand. His icy eyes danced as he laughed at Trez's struggles.
" Tell me puppy, how very different you are? How you feel things stronger than others, how you like to hurt yourself to feel. " He ran a nail over the scars that snaked all along his inner arm, probing for the memory and reveling in it. " To die alone? Because someone hurt you so deeply you had to fight back by bleeding? When all along you could have embraced your heritage and fought back by simply accepting who you really are. "
" Yeah I fucked up. What kid doesn't, it was stupid and it sucked. " He shivered at the feel of Broken's tongue on his scars, and was instantly aroused and horrified at the same time. He needed to keep talking but it was hard to even think. Was he doing something to calm him like before? But this time he wouldn't wake from it. Would it be so bad to be with Thane again?
" Oh no, no death for you little one. " With one nail he sliced a deep line from cheekbone to chin, licking at the blood that ran down Trez's face.
From the corn a sound came, a loud cracking sound as if something had been snapped in half. Both of them turned their heads to watch a splintered peice of fence come flying at them, landing point down in the dirt next to Trez's head. Another followed, almost spearing broken's hand. The wind roared and the corn shook as tiny rocks and dirt began to fly around them. It was all that the vampire needed to see. He was off Trez and gone in the blink of an eye, leaving the boy bleeding but alive. As soon as he was gone the stones and dirt settled back down.
With tears in his eyes Trez picked himself up, wondering what Broken was talking about when he had told him to embrace his heritage. It was a weird statement to make and something he would think about later. Right now he just wanted to get the hell out of there
