9 Reasons Why An Albatross Is Similar To A Human Being

1. Biped - An albatrosses legs are strong and it can walk well on land. Remind you of anything?

2. One Night Standers - These huge birds never stick to an annual migration and they disperse widely after breeding. It could be said that some humans might end up doing that too….

3. Diet - Albatrosses predominantly eat fish, crustaceans and offal. I’m not sure if I can say, for sure, that there are any humans that predominantly eat those things. But at least I can say that they are edible for us.  Also, some different species have different appetites. For example; the Black-footed Albatross mainly eats fish whereas the Laysan feeds on squid. So humans have different taste buds and evidently Albatrosses do as well! Lastly, they also eat during the day which most humans do.

4. The Empire - Some Albatrosses create huge colonies on big islands and nest there all happily together, whereas some may keep in smaller groups to nest their chicks. We could compare this to towns and cities that humans build together to raise their young and live in, all happily together.

5. Family Rituals - Young Albatrosses will join colonies that teach their special mating dances, that their family is famous for, to get ready for their first breeding season. This seems to me as though the parents are passing on their knowledge and wisdom to the younger generation which could also be said for humans. Pass on the baton of the genes!

6. Blame it on the Boogie - The dance that albatrosses decide to use to impress their mating partner is said to include preening, pointing, calling and staring. For one, humans can do all of those things and also some people like to attract others with their sweet moves.

7. Endless Love - Just to let you know that I am a hopeless romantic and so when I read that an albatross will find a partner and their bond will last for life I go a bit mushy. In my mind I like to wish that all humans would love each other for their whole entire lives but I guess we love our family for that long. Also, these two lovebirds (excuse the pun) will then create their own language between them to be able to communicate. They do this in order to make sure that their partner is the one and also because if you’re going to have a baby with someone you need to be certain that they are the right candidate. I like to think that humans choose their partners wisely, like this.

8. Trouble in Paradise - Now, not all love can last. So with an albatross if they are repeatedly failing to breed with their partner they will essentially “divorce”. I think we can relate this to humans in the way that it can be difficult for a couple when they fail to reproduce with each other.

9. Growing Up - Once a pair of albatrosses have a chick they then raise it up, by feeding it and guarding it, until it is large enough to defend itself and I think that humans raise their children in exactly the same way.
