Liberty's P.O.V
My eyes opened groggily as my alarm sounded from across the room, I had set my mobile phone across at the other side of my room so that I would have to get up in order to turn it off and stop its meticulous beeping. I knew it'd be hard to get up. The first day back has always been a difficult one.
I got up and dressed, shuffling down the stairs to where dad was already sat in the kitchen, making something on the stove.
"You look nice today, Liberty," He said, his smile bright. I still did not understand how he managed to be up and functioning at this time in the morning, every morning. Like, I knew he was a superhuman, but surely he wasn't this superhuman.
"Thanks," I mumble, trying to keep my eyes open, looking down at my outfit I had remembered to pick out yesterday night before I went to bed and passed out, snuggled beneath the blankets. I did actually quite like wearing this outfit; my ripped light blue jeans, my new trainers that Uncle Tony had gotten me for my birthday even though I told him that he didn't have to buy me anything and my mustard and black checked shirt that I had to tie in a small knot around my waist since it was one of the shirts that Peter had let me borrow and it was way too long on me.
"Pancakes for breakfast, hope that's okay?" Dad asked, knowing exactly what my answer would be.
Dad plated me up some pancakes as we had a nice chat like we tried to do every morning, well, to be honest, we didn't really try it just sort of always happened and it had started to become part of our morning routine. And just as if on cue, there was a pleasantly familiar knock at the door.
"Come in, it's open!" I shouted, my mouth full of glorious pancakes.
The door opened willingly and in entered Peter Parker with a surprisingly big smile on his face. He dropped his bag by the door and walked through towards the kitchen.
"Pete?" dad started speaking, he didn't even need to turn around from the stove to know exactly who it was going to be. "How'd ya like some pancakes?"
"Pancakes, made by the legendary Captain America," Peter gasped sarcastically, making me laugh through my pancakes, "how on earth could I ever say no to that!"
I could tell it made dad smile too as Peter sat down at the table next to me, I swallowed my mouthful and gave him a quick kiss, our hands latching onto one another, our fingers intertwining.
"You ready?" Peter asked
"As ready as I'll ever be," I replied, "to be completely honest, I just want to finish off this year and get out of there,"
"Don't rush it," dad chipped in, turning around with a plate of pancakes for Peter, nudging the maple syrup in his direction. "High school are some of the best and worst years of your life, don't wish all of the days away so fast,"
"I just feel like I've outgrown that place," I said, "so much happened over the summer, it's just going to feel weird being back,"
"Ditto," Peter commented, his face now full of my dad's pancakes, "These are amazing Mr Rogers," he then said, his eyes closed in ecstasy.
"Who would've thought that the famous Captain America was a world-class pancake maker?" I laughed, causing dad to laugh too.
We finished up the pancakes and finished getting ready. I said goodbye to dad, he then proceeded to remind us we were needed at Avengers Base afterschool, I rolled my eyes, as if I'd forget about that! And then Peter and I grabbed our bags and headed out of the door to school.
It was incredibly bizarre being back after everything that had happened that summer. I felt like a completely different human being since the last time I was walking down these hallways and seeing people who all genuinely classed me as a regular person, with no traces of what I guessed could be classed as 'hero material'. Now here I was again, my hand grasping hold of Peter's, my longish curls blowing behind me slightly as I walked. My nerves were jumping off the charts, and I couldn't quite understand why, but dad had said that after that fight with Thanos, none of us was ever going to be the same.
"Everything is going to be fine," Peter leant into my ear and whispered gently. Thank god that I had him, he knew how to calm my nerves even if it only helped very slightly. I smiled back up at him as we continued our walk to collect our new class timetables for the year.
We turned the corner to see none other than Penny, Astrid, Oliver, Hunter and Max all in line to collect their timetables too. We smiled and joint them, Ned joining us shortly after.
I was given my timetable and the first thing that the group of us did was compare our classes and see if we had any classes together. Thank god for that, Peter and I had maths together, but not science this year, which made me a little bit sad, but I guess that would mean I'd have to meet new people, which would be good practice. I had art with Astrid again, to which we were both very happy about, and I had English class with Penny and Max but then I didn't really have other classes with anyone. And of course, the first class of the day was Science, the one lesson where I had literally no one I knew. Typical.
I had always hated science, but before now I had always had Peter or Ned in that class with me whilst I was at Midtown High, now I had no one and it made the subject all the worse. I did, however, have the same teacher that I had the year before, which meant I was at least familiar with one person in the room.
"Good morning everyone, welcome back, I hope that you all had a great summer and are ready to work hard as ever again as we enter your final year here at Midtown High," Mrs Schwarts started, smiling lightly at the class as we took our seat and the class began. It was then that a very unfamiliar face showed up in the doorway to the classroom, catching Mrs Schwarts's eyes as she smiled towards them and gestured for them to come in.
"and before we start," she began again, the unfamiliar face walking through the door shyly towards the teacher's desk, "this is our newest student, Rebecca Green, make her feel welcome,"
Rebecca seemed to almost hide behind her raven-black, wavy shoulder-length hair, although her sea green eyes seemed to glow in the morning sunlight that danced through the large windows opposite. She seemed kinds scared, her hand fiddling with what looked like a charm bracelet that snaked itself around her small delicate wrists. I smiled at her, trying to just act normal and friendly, I knew what it felt like to be the new kid so I wasn't about to make this girl feel isolated or alone. Suddenly my phone buzzed in my pocket
"Take a seat next to... Liberty?" Mrs Schwarts continued, making me lift my head from my mobile phone at the mention of my name. I stared at the seat next to me, I hadn't realised that it was empty.
"Y-Yeah sure..." I reply, moving my stuff so that she has enough room on her side of the desk. I know that I said that I had no one and needed to make friends in this class, and as much as I hate saying this, but I didn't wish for the new girl.
Rebecca sat down next to me, smiling shyly as she started getting out her notebook and pencil case and then Mrs Schwarts did the register and we started our first class of the new school year.
