After dinner with my dad, which was pretty much him finally interrogating James, we came back to the house. I liked how dinner went, James was respectful, well as respectful as he can be, but whenever he said something sarcastic, my dad bit back with something worse. It was all in good humor and they really seemed to get along. My heart swells at the fact that I finally have something great with someone.
It is late in the evening and I really have to get back to my dorm. As if he could read my thoughts James comes up to me, breaking me from my thoughts.
"You ready to go Dell?"
"You're gonna take her back?" My dad chimes in.
"Well yeah, I figured I'd save you the trip, since I'm going that way too. If that's alright with you." James puts his hands in his pockets.
"Yeah of course, just be careful, it's dark out."
"Well I'll just go get my bag then." I say and head to my old room. I quickly gather my things and head back downstairs. My dad and James are laughing at something and I smile at the sight of them. I wish my mom could've met James, I think she really would have liked him.
"I'm ready." I say and my dad stands up to say goodbye.
"Alright pumpkin make sure you guys come visit again." He gives me a hug and I kiss his cheek.
"We will dad." I say and step aside so James can say bye.
"You take care of my daughter boy." My dad says in a harsh voice but softens it with a smile.
"Always." James says and glances at me. He shakes my dads hand and they do that handshake hug thing that men do.
By the time we leave it's 9 at night. Good thing my classes start late tomorrow because I'm gonna have a late night.
When we get in the car, James immediately takes my hand and starts driving. There is something so flattering about guys driving with one hand. I turn his hand over in mine and trace the veins on his hand. I look up at him and he glances over to me with a smirk.
"What?" I ask him.
"Nothing, I'm just happy." He admits.
"I know the feeling." I cheekily reply.
We spend a good hour bickering about random little stuff and he asks me what I have planned for the week.
"Nothing really, just classes and studying." I smile.
"My god, I'm dating a dork." He laughs.
"You bet your ass you are." I laugh along with him, but we are interrupted when my phone rings. I reach down to my bag to get it with one hand. When I grab my phone, I'm shocked to see that it reads "Cole" on the screen. James let's go of my hand so I can get the phone. Tonight is going so well and I don't want to mess it up, so I hit ignore. I try to reach for James' hand again but he puts it on the steering wheel. So much for not ruining the night.
"What now?" I ask, already annoyed at his childish behavior.
"Why don't you tell me Della? Why the fuck is Parker calling you?" He asks calmly. His tone throws me off, I expected him to yell at me. Somehow, this seems worse.
"I don't know James, did you not see me hit ignore?" I roll my eyes and turn towards the window.
"It doesn't matter, why is he even calling you? I thought you told him about us?" He raises his voice but I can hear the insecurity behind it.
"I told him there was something going on between us, but in case you didn't remember, there officially was no "us" up until 10 hours ago!" It's my turn to raise my voice.
