The Dead Fall

Chapter 3

Jake ran at the gates demanding to be let in.
"Help!" He yelled
The gates open and he came and fell down on the ground Kyle ran to him.
"What's going on? where's Noah?" Kyle asked
"I don't know. There's a group coming our way bringing zeds last I saw Noah was stabbed." Jake said catching his breath
"Holy shit." Kyle said looking at the people walking toward the open gate with an army of zeds behind them.
"Shut the gates." Jake demanded
Jake stood up and looked around.
"Cara, get everyone in their houses, it's an emergency." Jake said
"Yes sir." Cara said
Eva came running out from her house.
"What's going on? Where's Noah?" She yelled
That's when the gate was blown open by an explosive. The guys walked in led by Chase with a large group a zeds about 200ft from the safe zone.
"He's dead. And so are the rest of you." Chase said
Eva fell to the ground crying. Jake started walking to the guy and got in his face.
"Why are you doing this?" Jake asked
"Noah lied to me, I can't just let that happen." Chase said
"We have kids here, new born babies. This was our chance to restart and you're gonna take that away from us and get all these good people killed just because of a little lie?" Jake asked
Chase looked down at the ground and then looked at the zeds behind him. He made a hand motion and the person behind him. The guy pulled out a radio and said something into it.
"Noah shouldn't have lied to me." Chase said
A helicopter came flying over and landed in the safe zone. Chase and his men started walking toward it.
"Chase. If you leave all the people that die here today is on you." Jake said
"Can't you tell Jake? I don't care. Have fun." Chase said getting in the helicopter and leaving the area.
"He's a fucking psycho! Get the trucks ready to block the gate, I need some people to help me clear the zeds so they can block it!" Jake yelled
A few people pulled out their weapons and ran toward the zeds coming through the gate. Jake got the first kill and everyone around him started slashing zeds. Soon they had a gap so Kyle could drive a truck in to block the hole in the wall where the gate once was. Kyle drove in full speed and slammed the brakes causing the truck to slide in front of the gate taking a few zeds out on its way. Jake looked around and saw everyone wiping off their weapons and putting them up.
"Is everyone ok?" Jake asked
Eva came running up after taking a head count.
"We're all accounted for and no one got bit." Eva said catching her breath
Jake sat down with his back against the truck tire, Kyle hopped out and Jake gave him a high five.
"We did it." Jake said covered in blood and out of breath.
"What happens now?" Kyle asked
"I don't know. With Noah gone we don't have anyone to follow." Jake said
"What about you? You managed to get us all together to get the gate blocked." Kyle said
"I don't know what to do." Jake said
A few hours later Eva called a community meeting.
"What happened here today was pure evil. For a while we thought we were safe but, we were wrong. We thought we could rebuild, that the people still alive in this world had a common enemy. Turns out it's still the same as it was at the start, the living are far more dangerous then the dead. We won't let this cripple our effort to rebuild society it's not what Noah would've wanted. But at the same time we can't let these animals get away with what they did. Without him here we have no one to follow, I am not one to follow. But if he's up to it I think his best friend Jake is. Jake if you are ready to accept this responsibility come up on stage." Eva said
Jake stood their shocked that Eva would think he would be a good leader after Noah. He looked around and everyone was looking at him. He shook his head and walked up on stage, he gave Eva a hug and turned to the crowd.
"We won't let Chase and his group get away with this. Noah will be avenged!" Jake yelled
The crowd cheered and Eva grabbed him
"Make then pay." She whispered into his ear.
Jake looked at her, he could see the anger in her eyes. He nodded his head and walked off the stage toward Kyle.
"Kyle I'm putting you in charge of getting a group of fighters ready. Target practice, knife wielding, or hand to hand, anything you gotta do. Make us an army." Jake said to Kyle
"Yes sir." Kyle said
Jake sat down on a bench next to the fountain in the middle of town. Soon Eva came and sat down next to him.
"Did you see him die?" Eva asked
"Last I saw he was beat and stabbed in the stomach, there was nothing I could do, he told me to get back and warn the safe zone." Jake said a tear starting to go down his face
"So do you think there's a chance he's still alive?" Eva asked
"I don't know, I really hope so. We can't get out unless someone clears the zeds from the outside or they get bored and wonder off." Jake said
"I haven't told Louis yet I figured he'd want uncle Jake nearby." Eva said
"Ok let's go." Jake said
Jake and Eva walked to Noah's house and went in. Louis jumped up and ran to Jake and gave him a hug.
"Uncle Jake!" He shouted
"Hey sport, your mommy needs to talk with you about something." Jake said
Louis ran over to Eva and Jake watched from a distance as his happy face went to bawling tears. Jake had to turn around and walk out of the house.
