THE LAST time I went to a carnival when I was five years old. Neo wasn't born at that time. I really had a great time. Neo decided to go to the carnival, I actually didn't like to go but they forced me. Besides, I had my night vision glasses.
When we arrived, all I could hear were screams, laughs, and sounds of engines. The carnival was located on the widest plaza in our city. There were different stalls that surrounded the plaza. Auren saw a bracelet stall where we could choose what design and put our name on it.
"I'll choose this one," I said, holding the black leather bracelet. Neo chose yellow as well as Auren. Relationship goals they said.
"Here's the thing. I'll choose what to carve on Auren's bracelet, Auren will choose Carthik's and Carthik will choose mine," Neo suggested. I agreed with it. It didn't take me a long time to think about a name that would fit Neo. When we're all done, we showed the bracelets and gave it. First Neo, gave the bracelet to Auren.
"53, 71, 23, 92. What do you mean by this?" Auren asked when she finished reading it. Neo smiled and explained.
"Those are atomic numbers of Iodine, Lutetium, Vanadium, and Uranium which their symbols create a word, I luv u."
"Aw, you're so sweet!" Auren exclaimed. I was just standing and watching their boyfriend and girlfriend moments. "Okay, your turn Carthik."
I took the bracelet from her palm and read it. The name was beautifully carved on it. Well, it's more likely a quote not a name. Still, it was nice.
"DOn't quIT," I read. That quote hit me, I felt like quitting and ending my life especially when my parents died because of me. But this wasn't the time to ruminate. I let out a smile, not a fake one. "Thanks!"
"My turn! Hmm, I wonder," Neo said as he received the bracelet. His eyes bulged and laughed like a hyena. I couldn't stop laughing too. "Unicorn boy!" Auren joined us too and the three us was laughing at the top of our lungs.
"Hahaha! You still love unicorns, don't you?" Auren laughed.
The three of us wore our bracelets and I really felt good wearing it. We stopped in front of a shake stall. I bought a choco hazelnut flavor shake, Neo chose cookies and cream, and Auren picked mint. They were busy talking and eating when I noticed somebody was looking at us again. The same feeling I felt when we were in the cemetery. I looked at our surroundings but all I could see were people walking passed to each other. I should have told them about it but I didn't.
When we got home, I immediately went into the balcony of my room. I lit up my cigarette and let out a deep breath. Neo and Auren were in the living room, watching a horror movie. They invited me but I refused and this time, they didn't force me anymore.
I couldn't help myself but remembered what Auren said. I didn't know Orlstein's still alive, after all these years, she didn't bother to see me nor talk to me through social media. But I didn't have any social media account.
The moment I told her the truth about my eyes, she didn't say anything. She just stood up and went out of my room. That was the last time I saw her. Was she afraid of me? If so, she really didn't treat me as a friend and I shouldn't have told her the truth. I lit up another cigarette to warm my mood.
After I relaxed my mind, I went to the living room and the lights were already off so as the television. I heard water flowing from the kitchen so I went there. It was Auren. Her hair was tied with a red ribbon. I didn't see her wear it earlier, maybe Neo gave it to her. She was washing her hands. I turned on the lights.
"Did I startle you?" I asked as I leaned against the wall.
"Not that much. I thought you're already asleep," she answered. She shook her hands and dried it in the air.
"I wasn't. Where's Neo?"
"Sleeping. He wasn't able to finish the movie because he fell asleep," she laughed. "Anyway, aren't you going to sleep?"
"No," I shook my head. "I wanted to ask something."
Her smile faded and looked away. Then she faced me and smiled again. What's the matter? I wanted to ask her that but I didn't.
"Is it about Orlstein?" she asked. There was a hint of sadness in her tone. I nodded and invited her to sit.
"How is she?"
"She's doing good. She has three side-line jobs and a job interview tomorrow or the next day. Well if you're asking if she has a boyfriend, she doesn't have."
"Wait, wait. I don't actually care if she has a boyfriend or not," I said. Jeez, why did she tell me that? It was an actually unnecessary fact about Orlstein.
"Did you two fight each other or have a misunderstanding? She doesn't mention you and avoids the topic whenever it talks about you since the last time you two hanged-out." Did we?
"No," I said. It was almost a whisper. She just left after knowing the truth. If only I could tell Auren about it.
"If you say so. But I wish you two should talk. I feel how much you miss her and I'm sorry about it. Wait, I can give you her number," she offered.
"No. It's okay. If she doesn't want to talk to me or about me, I respect it," I refused. Besides, I prefer to talk to her in person.
"Well, see you tomorrow. Gotta sleep now. Good night!"
"Good night."
