HIS EYES: Chapter 5

ALL OF us were ready to leave. Neo was wearing a festival mask with different colors of feathers. He was one of the performers and Auren had prepared a banner. There was a "GO NEO!" written on the banner.

When we arrived in the city plaza, Neo went to join with his company while I and Auren sat on the bleachers. I glanced at
my watch and it was already past 1 P.M. While we were waiting for the others to perform, I was just playing Shape Switch. I was planning on beating my highest score.

By the time the clock reached 2 P.M. the program started. I heard that Neo's group would be the last performer. The crowd had gone wild when the first group named ALA BANG was performing. It was the champion last year. I couldn't lie to myself that they really deserved what they got. Their choreography was amazing and their costumes were fascinating.

Auren stood up and raised the banner when Neo's group were on the floor. The sun had already set and the lights were turned on. Their performance started and Auren couldn't stop on screaming. Their actions were powerful and synchronized. When they were already done, all of the audience was clapping and shouting their group name. They got a standing ovation from the audience and also the judges who were on the stage.

The winners were about to announced by the emcee and Auren couldn't stop praying. When Neo's group was proclaimed as the grand winner, Auren was jumping and grabbing my arms. She was the proudest girlfriend there if I were to choose.

We were waiting for Neo near the stage. There were many people passing by and probably heading to the carnival or the Apple Party. But we were just standing here. It was part of Neo's plan. He was going to propose to Auren tonight and I was part of the plan.

Suddenly, I felt chills in my spine. What was that? I looked around. Was somebody watching me? Things happened so fast that I could barely recall it. A person who was wearing a black mask and hood was charging towards me, holding a knife. What should I do? I didn't have any time to think. Self-defense, that was the only solution I could decide in just a matter of time.

When I noticed that person wasn't wearing any sunglasses nor covering his or her eyes, I did what I need to do. I took off my night vision glasses and stared at that person's eye directly. But shit happened.

All I could hear was my heartbeat. My vision turned black. The same feeling I felt whenever I stared at someone's eye directly. I saw a knife. Blood. A bloody knife. When I opened my eyes and wore my night vision glasses, people were standing around me. Somebody was calling for an ambulance. What happened?

"Auren!" I thought. I was sweating, cold. When I looked at Auren, she was bathing with blood. I looked for the person earlier but I couldn't him or her.

"Where's the freakin ambulance?!" an old man shouted. After he said that, an ambulance came.

When I got back into my senses, I realized Auren saved me and I got eye contact with her. I couldn't feel my body. I wished I was the one who died.

"No, please. Auren, please don't go. Just hang in there, okay?" I said. I leaned closer to her, I felt her breath. She was still alive.

"T-t-take c-care o-o-of N-neo," she said weakly. There were tears on her cheeks after she uttered those words. Her last words. How could I tell this to Neo? How could I explain it to him?

Nurses carried Auren in the ambulance. When I was about to enter, I heard Neo's voice.

"Auren! Auren! Auren! That's my girlfriend!" Neo shouted and continued to shout until he was beside me and the nurses tried to calm him.

"Sir, calm down. We'll do everything," the nurse said.

We rode on the ambulance. I was on the right side while Neo was on the opposite side. He was holding her bloody hand, kissing it. He was crying. It was the first time I saw him crying like that.

When we arrived at the hospital, Auren was hurriedly brought to the emergency room while I and Neo were waiting outside. I wanted to calm him but I couldn't. He sat on the floor and put his head on his knees. He looked like a child who's toy has been stolen. When I couldn't take it anymore, I stayed beside him, patting his back.

"Don't touch me," he said. He's mad so I followed what he said. He clenched his fist and looked at me. If his stares could kill, I was already gone. "I expected to propose to Auren, alive not dead."

"It wasn't my fault!" I blurted. It was a half lie. Even if I didn't look at her, she would still die because she was going to save me. But I noticed that person coming towards me, I should have moved. Neo stood up and smirked.

"Yeah, it wasn't your fault, it was that killer's fault but you could have at least save her! I trusted you. I trusted you to take care of her."

"Well, thank you! But isn't your responsibility was to take care of her as her boyfriend? Anyway, this argument is pointless. All we have to do now is to pray for Auren's life."

He didn't answer me, instead, he stormed out of the hospital. I knew I was carried away by my emotion but he couldn't just blame me like that.  A thought came into my mind, I looked at Auren's eye. No, it was just an accident.

I was about to follow Neo outside but I stopped when I saw a woman walking towards me. It's her. Even if her hair was changed, even if her looks had changed a little, I couldn't forget her name.

"Orlstein."
