Many years after the war, Ethan came back to visit a long time friend and drank coffee and smoked cigarettes with her. They talked about everything they have seen and done together, even the things they carried throughout their livesOn the kitchen table, there was old photos spread out. They saw familiar faces like Emma, James, David, Scott, And Liza when they were all young. They saw all of them being happy, before some of them parted their own ways. Then, Ethan and his friend encounter a picture of Grayson leaning against the wall with a red solo cup.
Both of them didn't say anything and didn't know what to say. "I don't know how I could forgive myself," Ethan said. After Grayson's death, Ethan wasn't the same and thought it would be the best to blame himself for it but it wasn't his fault.
Ethan's friend was hesitant to ask Ethan a question, but when she finally did, Ethan's face lit up and couldn't say any words. She didn't know if she offended him, but Ethan left the table and came back with a picture.
"I thought you burned this.." his friend said. "I did, well kinda but I did." Ethan's friend was confused and kept staring at the photo of y/n when she played volleyball.
"Let's just say... we reconnected at a college reunion," Ethan said. He began telling his friend how they spent most of their time together, catching up. y/n was innocent, she wasn't like many girls that he has met before. she was still a virgin, considering she had a few boyfriends in the past, but one thing that he really remembered was how she said that she would never get married but didn't know why.
One night, he took y/n on their first and only date at the movies. Ethan took her hand, but she didn't squeeze back and told her that he loved her, but she didn't answer. Ethan dropped her off at her house and wanted to do something brave but he didn't want anything awkward between them.
The next morning, y/n invited him for breakfast and apologized for what happened and surprised him with another photo of her and told him to not burn that one.
Ethan knew that Grayson loved y/n, but she didn't felt the same way. She would always write letters to Ethan when he was gone, and Grayson would read them without him knowing. He would always see
"love, y/n" but always read it as in a friendly way. Grayson was really in love that he wouldn't stop thinking about her, and he feels like that's why he died. Thinking too much of y/n and not being concentrated on the war.Ethan's friend walked Ethan to his car and asked him if she could write this story someday and Ethan said, "sure, just don't include her that much. What if she reads it someday?" His friend agrees and they say their goodbyes.
