I sat in my room. The lonlieness was like a shadow and i can't escape my own shadow.
I pressed my head against the door and listened to the children sitting outside my door.
"Should we knock?" someone whispered- i think Frank.
"What if she gets mad?" Emily said, somewhat loud. Everyone shushed her.
"I think we should just let her be," Sally said.
"Sally! Sally! Come, you have to mop the kitchen!" said a loud screechy voice- Terry. The kids gasped.
"I- I have to go," she said as she ran away.
I sighed and pulled myself off the door and walked over to the hole in my wall. Sure enough, a small note was tucked into it- it must be from Quinn. I love Quinn, shes my best friend. She might be two years younger, at 14, but shes known me since i was 6 and she was 4, when she was first admitted into the foster care system. Her parents died in a house fire- she barely escaped with her life and little brother.
"Are you alright?" the note exclaimed. I laughed to myself.
"I'm alright... shaken up, nothing more," i lied. I didn't want her to worry. I pushed the piece of paper through the wall and fell back on to my bed. My eyes begain drifting shut- crying really tired me out, I supposed. I'll just lay back for a little.......... sle.....ep...........
~~~
I woke up with a start, gasping for breath. Everything was dark outside- must have been hours. I checked the note- three notes, now.
"Are you sure? It sounded bad!"
"Sounds like you fell asleep based on the snores ha-ha."
"Dinner has started. Join us when you wake up, k?"
I suddenly felt my stomach rumble- I feel way too hunrgy. Standing up, i felt suddenly dizzy. I stumbled over to the door. Just as my hand was about to fall on to the doorknob the lights flickered.
I stepped back and looked around. Seemed fine. I looked out the window- thunderstorms. That would explain it. I stepped back to open the door and the lights flickered again. One by one, they all blew out. I looked around and suddenly heard the kids scream from the dining hall down the hallway.
"Lily?" I heard from deep down the hall.Of course- Terry. "Lily i know your behind this!"
Suddenly my window burst open- loudly. A gust of wind and rain flew in to my room. A drop landed in my eyes and i stumbled over to the bed. Terry's footsteps grew louder and i heard her rattle the doorknob.
"Lily! I know your in there! Open up!"
I opened my mouth to speak but words somehow escaped my throat. She banged the door.
"Lily! Answer me!" The wind was so loud and... someone suddenly grabbed my wrist. I gasped before I could say anything.
Something slammed against the door- Terry must be trying to break it down.
Whatever was on my wrist tightened. I didn't want to look at who- or what- was holding me, i just knew it felt cold... cold like a shadow. I tried to break free but it held me back.
I caught my breath. "T- Terry! H- Hel-"
And then i was ripped from my bed and out the window.
I screeched as my body was pulled out of the building and looked down- i shut my eyes, preparing for impact.
Nothing happened. Instead of falling I was... flying. The cold hand was still on my wrist. I looked up to see who it was and gasped.
It was nothing- just a shadow. It was flying... and i was stuck with it.
I looked down but everything was a sudden blur- we were going so fast i couldn't even see where i was. I tried to shake my wrist free but his grip was so tight.
"Who- what are you?" I shouted over the wind. He didnt even flinch, much less look back and answer.
"Please!" I screamed and tried again to shake my wrist. I looked down. "Help! Someone help!"
I saw people but they were so blurry I couldn't tell if they heard me.
"Let go!" I screamed, but nothing worked. Looking forward, we were barely dodging the tall buildings. The wind was so strong...
Suddenly there was no ground underneath us, just water, ocean. Making a seemingly pointless series of twists and turns i felt... lost.
We flew over empty ocean for what felt like hours and minutes and years and seconds all smushed together until i saw it- something small just on the horizon. I squinted and watched as it got closer. It was... huge. An entire island. I couldn't remember any kind of island like this in geography class.
The shadow flew down, closer to the water.
"What is this place? Where are you taking me?" Still no answer.
The shadow was flying towards a small cove. I tried again to break my wrist free
"Let me go!" I screamed, as i swung myself up to kick the shadow. Upon impact, i ripped my wrist out one last time... and finally it worked.
The shadow figure tried to grab me as i fell.
Suddenly I felt the impact of the water against my side. I stood up and gasped for breath, sputtering and trying to make out the figure in front of me.
"Well," said the figure, as the shadow landed next to him, "this is unexpected."
Then everything went black.
