During the lunchbreak Beatrice continued trying to persuade Kit to join the Drama Club. She told her about the play they were planning to perform, which was "Macbeth" by William Shakespeare. While walking along the corridor to the next class, they passed the club lists that were pinned onto the wall. Beatrice guided her friend towards them and together they took a look at the many names signed up.
Many clubs were already full, but the Drama Club still had two name slots without a name in them. Upon seeing this, Beatrice wrote down her name and handing Kit the pen to do the same. For a moment she didn't want to do it. But then she thought about Beatrice having fun with her brothers without her, possibly talking bad about her behind her back. Her brothers were so much more likable than her, she thought. After looking at Beatrice and receiving an encouraging smile, she wrote down 'Kit Snicket'.
My name was already on this list, together with Lemony and Jacques Snicket, Esme Squalor and Bertrand Baudelaire as well as other names I didn't recognize at that point, but that are now very common to every volunteer.
Kit had a hard time concentrating on the classes because she knew she had to talk infront of the Drama Club. Beatrice, on the other hand, was looking forward to the meeting as she loved performing infront of others. As they made their way to the theatre together, Kit was taking deep breaths to avoid panicking. At the same point, Beatrice was starting to feel bad for persuading her friend for signing up.
Many people were already seated in the large room that had a big stage at one side and a grandstand on the other.
When Kit saw Jacques, she smiled and waved at him. Jacques and Lemony looked very much alike, but while Lemony's hair was shorter and gelled back to make him look professional, Jacques' hair was longer and always a bit messy.
"Hello, little sister. What are you doing here?", he asked Kit.
"Beatrice made me sign up.", she answered, still nervous. "There are many roles in 'Macbeth', so you can play a small role without many lines.", he said.
"Will there be a casting of any kind?", Kit then asked.
"Only for the bigger roles.", he replied, letting his sister relax a little.
But when Kit's eldest brother entered the room together with another student, everyone looked at them. Lemony's outer appearance and natural authority made the chatter in the room disappeared and everybody expected a speech to start. But while everybody was looking at Lemony, Kit's focus was on the boy next to her brother. She had never seen him before, so he might have come to the school that year. His brown hair was also gelled back just like Lemony, but his hairline was unusually high and a unibrow above his blue eyes that had a special kind of sparkle in them. He was emanating a similar type of confidence both of her brothers did.
"I'm very glad so many students decided to join the Drama Club this year.", Lemony said in a loud voice, looking around the room. Upon seeing his little sister, he was tunned for a moment, not suspicting her there at all.
But then he continued talking as if nothing had happened: "For anyone that doesn't know me yet, I'm Lemony Snicket and I'm the president of the club and this", Lemony was pointing at the boy next to him, " is my vice president. Since he is new at our school, I don't suspect any of you know him."
"Hello everyone.", the boy said in a charming way, "I'm happy to meet you all. My name is Olaf."
