Wind whipped the trees outside, and you wondered to yourself if it was the house that was shaking, or if it was just you. Ever since you could remember, storms were your worst enemy. Anytime you saw a flash of lightning crack against the sky like an electric whip, you'd hide under your bed with all of your stuffed animals until your parents had to literally drag you out. Of course, you were older now, amd being scared of a little rain was probably stupid.

This wasn't just a little rain, though. Every five seconds that you'd tried to watch T.V, there would be yet another hurricane warning with your area code listed. A knot had formed in your stomach since then, amd it was still there. You couldn't do much other than close all the curtains and lock all the windows, sitting in a corner of your kitchen, drinking coffee and trying to grab ahold of a good wifi connection, difficult with the approaching storm.

To you, it was a perfect day to stay in. To your boyfriend, David, it wasn't. He'd decided to go out with some friends, trusting that you'd be okay alone. Of course, you'd said yes. But now that the rain hit your window pane like bullets, you weren't so sure.

Outside, the wind had worsened. The sky was unreadable through the mist, and it seemed as though the trees would split in half if someone threw a stone at them.

The sky darkens by the second, and the feeling in your stomach strangles you in fear. Another crash of thunder pierces your ears.

Where was David? He said he wouldn't be long. He knew that you had a phobia of bad weather like this. What if something bad happened?

It was barely recognizable outside now. Spoons and knives in your kitchen rattled against each other, the metallic clangs accompanying the thunder and lighting that echoed from wall to wall. You could feel your heart heaving your chest, and sweat trickled down your forehead as you stood up shakily, peering out of the window.

A flash of lightning then visibly struck a tree. You could see it give way, even through the bright white light. You were too stunned to move.

Behind you, the front door opened. A soaked David walked in, his shoes squishing sickeningly beneath his feet. His face dropped.

"Andi!" he yelled.

Before you could process it, he'd lunged his entire body protectively toward you. You barely react, only listening carefully enough to hear your ceiling crumbling apart, and your wallpaper ripping into shreds. The tree's branches barely missed you.

You could feel David's heart pounding against yours, and he had his his arms shielding your for a few extra moments before heaving himself up, off the ground, extending a hand. You get up wearily, dusting your clothes off.

"Are you alright?" he chokes.

You nod. "It didn't hurt that m-much..." You bite back tears and force a worried smile. "I don't think the ceiling can say the same thing, though."

David groans, kicking at the leaves scattered across your living room floor now. Rain continuously darted into your house, but there was nothing either of you could do to stop it.

Instead of looking for ways to patch up the ceiling, David gathers you in his arms, and for the first time that day, you feel safe.

"Don't worry, baby. I'm right here, we'll fix this. I'm so sorry for leaving you... i-if I had known-"

You nuzzle into his shirt. "It's fine, you're here now." You squeeze him tighter. "Thankfully."

Raindrops to attack you both, but nothing felt more right in that moment than being in his arms.
