"The meaning of life= ?"
"Its what you make it"
"April, can you take these to the washing line please hun" Mary, turned to face her daughter with a basket full of clothing. Her blonde hair hung short and neat, just below her shoulders. She was a tall slender person, her brown warm eyes emitted that motherly feel. She had a rather pointed nose but still able to look sophisticated on her face. Her lips small , but dainty and pink.
"Yes mum, but Athena will be here soon so." April took the washing from her mum, sighed, and did what she was told.Athena looked at her phone, checking for the right address before looking at house, this neighbour hood overall looked much nicer, compared to Athenas. Giving a feeling of brightness and happiness. Despite the houses all looking the same. Aprils was a much brighter blue, and flowers stood tall and and prideful.
By now the blood behind her neck has dried ,and some stained her shoulders and t-shirt.
Too scared to knock on the door she took out her phone
Athena: "I'm outside, and i need help. I'm bleeding"
April: "I'm coming...what happened?!"
Athena: "Ill explain later"
Elijah was added to the chat
Elijah: hai! Im omw!
Athena twisted her feet in a nervous reck and the door quickly opened, revealing April. Her ginger hair tied up in a neat ballet bun, the sun complimenting her freckles, and her eyes filled with bright and happiness, opposite of Athena's. April, smiled as soon as she saw Athena but turned into a frowned when she saw her blood stained shoulders.
"Welll, come on in"
She did what she was told
—-
"ELIJAH, get you ass here. NOW!"
"Mummmmmmm, im about to leave"
"Does it look like i give a damn"
Elijah groaned, he was late but that wasn't the least of his problems, he walked into the living room. To see his mother, an 30 year old African women with Kinky curly hair which sprung in all kind of directions, sat lazy on the sofa, nursing a child.
"Pass me the remote"
"Seriously?" Elijah answered back.
"Ay, dont do no tone with me midster. Do what i say, i brought you into this world...i can take you out."she snapped back. "Pass me my god damn remote, your standing there like you have to pay the electricity bills." She kissed her teeth.
Elijah stood there as usual listening to his mother rant. "I work day and night to get you feed," rolling his eyes. As soon as his mum took a break from the long moan he speed off.
———
His feet pattered hard on the pavement, he inhaled deeply. Ignoring the stares of the neighbourhood.
Elijah, the only none white person in the school besides Athena who was chinese-asian.
"Mummy, why is he a funny colour,"
"Mummy look, an Animal"
"Shhh hunny, he can hear you, but good boys for repeating what mummy says..." said a concerned mother moving her two kids along the side walk. Elijah silently ran passed them smirking at the little boy, and waved. The boy waved back, and giggled.
"Go back to the plantains, slave." Spat the mother hiding her kids away from him. Elijah froze. His smile dropping to a sinister frown. Turning around, "what did you say?..." he whispered approaching the parent, slowly. The mother gulped , "i said, go back...to the plantains. In fact, go back to your country" gaining confidence
"Ohh" laughed Elijah, "my country? The country that your ancestors stripped my ancestors from" he approached them slowly. "The country where millions of men, women and children" he looked at the children and back at the mum " was either murdered, raped or put to slavery. Treated like nothing." he whispered so the kids wont hear. "Yet, your the one who call us, Animals."
"This constant circle of hate, the pure evil that your feeding your children. And you call yourself a mother, a real mother is meant to raise your kids how to love-"
"Dont tell me how to raise my kids" she spat back.By now he was face to face with the mother, she was now completely pale. He looked at his watch, 1 hour late. Kissing his teeth, he again waved at the little boy, who waved back. "Look after mummy for me" Elijah said, the boy nodded, " i will!"
Elijah turned, taking one more glance at the mother and ran off
"You will pay for this!" He heard her shout. He smirked again and turned the corner.
——-
April stood beside Athena, as Mary patched up Athenas head.
"Your lucky its not that dee-"
The doorbell rang.
"Ahhh, that must be Elijah." April mumbled running to open the door, Athena watched her disappear down the corridor. "Athena," Mary said in a hushed whispered, "you should've asked me to pick you up."
"I know, i'm sorry. I didn't want to disturb you."
Mary sighed, "this house is your refuge....Your safe place. Never be too scared too come, or call me."
Before Athena can answer, April came back with Elijah following her. "What the hell , what happened to you" snapped Elijah, Athena went red with embarrassment and fear, she looked down and took a deep breathe...
"My mum."
