"Come on, Silverkit!" Silverkit opened her eyes. "What do you want, Beekit?" She groaned. Beekit scrambled over the edge of the mossy nest they shared with their mother, Daisynose. She batted gently at Silverkit's ears and face. "The patrol just got back from hunting, and Thunderpelt said he'd bring us something good, remember?" Silverkit stood up and stretched, arching her back and curling her tail.
"Oh!" exclaimed Beekit as Fiercekit pounced on her, flattening her on the ground. "Get off me, you great lump!" She heaved herself up and Fiercekit rolled off of her, hitting the ground. He bounced back up immediately. "Thunderpelt brought us a whole rabbit!" He said excitedly. Silverkit gracefully leaped out of the nest and trotted out of the nursery, squinting in the sudden daylight.
She spotted the rabbit and darted towards it, with Fiercekit and Beekit right behind her. "Look at the size of this thing!" She exclaimed, prodding it with her one silver paw. "It will probably take all day to eat it," commented Beekit. "Well, I guess we better get started!" Said Fiercekit, lunging towards the rabbit.
He instead smacked head first into Thunderpelt's huge paw. "No you will not," he laughed, "but you can take it to the elders." "But then we won't get any," Fiercekit whined. "Well, I'm sure they'll be glad to share with you if you ask politely," said Thunderpelt. He licked Fiercekit on the head. "Now go on, they might even tell you a story if you get them their food quick enough." "A story?" Squealed Beekit. "I love their stories! But Rustnose has the best ones."
Silverkit nodded solemnly in agreement. "Let's go!" Fiercekit called. He whipped around and scampered off towards the elders den. Beekit and Silverkit walked side by side.
"I hope Rustnose will tell us a good story," said Beekit. Silverkit nodded. "Maybe he'll tell us about when he fought off a lion, or about when he saved that group of Riverclan kits from a badger!"
The sisters entered the elder's den, and spotted Fiercekit nestled next to Pebblespots, one of the oldest elders. He was listening to Rustnose's story. "And then, I arched my back and hissed at the lion, saying, 'Get off of our territory, mangepelt!'" Rustnose paused to scratch his ear. "What happened next?" Asked Beekit. "I'm not sure you youngsters could handle it," he rumbled. "But we can! Please tell us, Rustnose!" Silverkit pleaded.
"Well then, if you can handle the story, then I suppose I ought to finish it." All three kits nodded earnestly. "So, the lion roared ferociously and lunged at me, but I was too quick. I leaped up on it's back and gave it a clawing it'll never forget!" He finished proudly. Beekit and Silverkit gazed at him in awe.
"Well, I bet I could've fought the lion off too," boasted Fiercekit. "Is that so?" said Pebblespots. Fiercekit puffed out his chest. "I'm not afraid of anything." Beekit slowly snuck up behind him and leaped, landing on top of him with her paw on his neck. Fiercekit screeched in surprise. Beekit released him and the elders and Silverkit purred in laughter.
"Who's afraid now?" she taunted. Fiercekit leaped at her, paws outstretched. "You are!" He yowled, bowling her over. Silverkit watched them tussle thoughtfully, only turning to look when she heard a sound at the entrance of the nursery.
Daisynose peered inside. "There you guys are," she said. "I've been looking for you kits everywhere."
Beekit and Fiercekit broke apart, both covered in dust and bits of leaves. "Come on now, I think it's time for a rest." Beekit and Silverkit nodded sleepily. Fiercekit frowned. "But I'm not tired!" He protested indignantly. Daisynose twitched her whiskers in amusement and gently lifted him by the scruff.
She then began carrying him towards the nursery, gesturing with her tail for Beekit and Silverkit to follow her.
