Silverkit settled down in the mossy nest, tucking her paws underneath her and resting her tail lightly over her nose. She snuggled up next to Daisynose and Beekit. Fiercekit was already asleep on the other side of the nest. Silverkit relaxed and rested her gaze on a blue butterfly flitting past the entrance of the den. As she began to doze off, the last thing she saw was the butterfly landing on a blade of grass.
Something prodded her in the side. "Get off me, Beekit." she mumbled. A cold breeze drifted across her face. Silverkit opened her eyes and glanced around confusedly. She was standing in the middle of a chilly, dark forest. A twig snapped, and she angled her ear towards the location of the sound. She heard the soft padding of pawsteps through the forest. Silverkit turned around and hesitantly picked her way through the forest, following the noise.
She noticed the sound was gradually getting louder. She rounded a corner and stopped in her tracks.
A sleek, rust colored tom sat in the clearing. Silverkit cringed away from the dim light of the clearing, trying to not be spotted. The tom continued to sit in the clearing, still as a rock. She was about to try and slip away, but stopped as another tom stepped into the clearing.
"Ah, Clawstripe, I was beginning to wonder what was taking so long." said the rust colored tom. "Sorry, Bloodfang." meowed Clawstripe. "Rippleshade needed me." Bloodfang slowly stood up and stretched. He strolled over to Clawstripe. "Really?" he meowed. "Because I seem to recall that she was with me just a moment ago." His voice was like ice. Clawstripe visibly tensed up. "I-, I- I don't-" he stuttered. Bloodfang reared up and slashed Clawstripe across his face. He fell back and yowled in agony.
Bloodfang calmly sat back down and began washing his paw. Clawstripe was still laying on the ground, moaning in pain. "Get up, Clawstripe," Bloodfang hissed. "Do not lie to me, ever." He moved his face closer, his brown eyes blazing in anger. "Do you understand?" Clawstripe struggled to sit up, and when Silverkit got a good look at his face, she recoiled in horror. There was a long, bloody, slash across his face. It stretched from his cheek to the tip of his ear, and his eye was closed.
"Yes, Bloodfang." meowed Clawstripe, his voice shaking and weak. "Good, because I need your full loyalty when it's time to put our plan into action." "You don't mean... her?" asked Clawstripe. "Who else could I mean?" snapped Bloodfang. Clawstripe cringed away from him. "But don't worry," he purred. "When the time comes, we will take care of her." Silverkit sat back on her haunches. She wondered who Bloodfang was talking about. Suddenly the darkness and horrors of the place she was in started to overwhelm her, so she began to slowly back away.
Silverkit was so intent on leaving the terrible clearing that she forgot to move quietly. She snapped a twig under her paw. Bloodfang looked up and locked eyes with her. She froze, her insides writhing with terror. His eyes were empty. He cocked his head at her, his ripped ear tipping to one side. She whirled around and pelted through the trees, crashing into bushes, not caring where she went as long as it was far, far, far away from Bloodfang.
"Silverkit!" yowled Daisynose. "What in StarClan's name are you doing?" Silverkit snapped awake and looked at her mother. She was staring at her with worry in her eyes, with Beekit and Fiercekit crouched just behind her, their eyes wide in a mixture of fear and curiosity. Silverkit looked down, realizing that she was covered in moss and the nest was shredded. She relaxed. "It was just a dream." she thought. "What happened to you?" demanded Fiercekit.
Silverkit looked at him quizzically. Beekit stepped forward. "You were twisting and thrashing around in your nest, yowling something about blood." she said nervously. Silverkit shook her head. "It was just a dream." she assured them.
But the more she thought about it, the less sure she became. Daisynose still looked worried. "Well," she meowed hesitantly. "Another hunting patrol just returned, so come and get something to eat, and you might feel better." Silverkit nodded and climbed out of the nest. Side by side, her and Beekit padded into the clearing.
"You know," said Beekit. "I'm here for you, and if something is wrong, please tell me." Silverkit dipped her head. "Of course." They reached the fresh kill pile. Silverkit scanned the pile. No rabbit. She was disappointed, rabbit was her favorite. "Hey, Silverkit!" Sprucepaw called. She looked up at the handsome, smoky gray tom. "Yes?" she replied. "Come share this rabbit with me." She looked at the plump rabbit resting between his black paws.
And then she looked at Beekit. Her sister had a glimmer of amusement in her eyes. "Go on," she said. "Go eat with him." Silverkit twined her tail with Beekit's, then she began trotting happily across the clearing towards Sprucepaw, all memories of the dream forgotten.____________-•o•-___________
