Silverkit opened her eyes. She noticed she was alone in the nest. She sat up and began grooming herself, wondering where Beekit and Fiercekit were. And at that moment, Beekit tumbled into the den, head over paws. "Silverkit!" she meowed in delight. "Guess what?" Silverkit could sense the excitement flooding off of her in waves. "What is it, Beekit?" she purred in laughter.
"Lionstar says our apprentice ceremony is going to happen soon!" Silverkit squealed in excitement. Her, an apprentice? She began dreaming about training and hunting, or going on patrols with Sprucepaw. She didn't even notice that Beekit was trying to get her attention. However, she did notice when Beekit leaped on her back and pushed her muzzle to the ground.
"Hey, mousebrain, I'm trying to tell you something important!" Silverkit shook herself and stood up. "What could be more important than our apprentice ceremony?" she asked.
"Flowerpaw said she was going hunting and we could go with her!" Silverkit shot past Beekit and out of the den. "What are you waiting for?" she called over her shoulder. Beekit snorted and pelted after her into the clearing.
They stopped at the entrance of the ThunderClan camp and began waiting. A few minutes later, Flowerpaw trotted over to them. "Are you two ready?" she asked. "Yes!" meowed Silverkit. Beekit was practically buzzing with suppressed excitement. Flowerpaw flicked her tail in amusement, turned around, and began padding towards the thorn tunnel that lead out of the camp.
Silverkit and Beekit followed right behind her. They had just reached the clearing outside of the camp when they heard a voice. "Flowerpaw?" It was Sprucepaw. The three cats spun around to face him. His gaze dropped down to Silverkit and Beekit standing beside her. He frowned. "Where are you taking them?" he asked. "You know kits aren't allowed out of camp." Flowerpaw shrugged.
"It's just a little hunting session," she meowed innocently. "What could happen?" "You could get attacked," he meowed anxiously. "You're just an apprentice, and they're only kits," he took a breath and looked down at Silverkit. "I don't want any of you to get hurt." Silverkit felt fuzzy inside. Sprucepaw didn't want her to get hurt. That meant he cared about her!
She took a step away from Flowerpaw. Just as she decided to go back to camp with him, Flowerpaw swept her tail around her and drew her back. "I'm perfectly capable of keeping them safe, and you know that, Sprucepaw!" she said angrily. "I know you can, but-" Flowerpaw stepped foreward, and faced Sprucepaw, nose to nose. "We're leaving." she hissed. She whipped around and angrily stomped away.
Silverkit and Beekit meekly followed her. And as she walked away, Silverkit felt Sprucepaw's eyes on her. She wanted to go back to him, but felt that she couldn't. Not after his and Flowerpaw's argument. So she kept walking, leaving him behind. As they padded through the forest, Silverkit tried to distinguish all of the exciting new smells from each other. Her senses were almost overwhelmed by all of the distracting sights and noises. She glanced over at Beekit, noticing that her sister seemed to be everywhere at once.
Beekit was darting from plant to plant, sniffing at every crack and crevice she could reach. Silverkit heard a purr of laughter close to her. She looked up in confusion. Flowerpaw was perched on a low lying branch of a tree, watching Beekit scurry around. Flowerpaw and Silverkit sat in silence for a moment, watching her.
Beekit noticed everyone had stopped to watch her, and quickly sat down and began grooming herself in an attempt to regain her composure. Flowerpaw puffed out her chest proudly. "As you both know, I'm almost a warrior." She narrowed her eyes playfully. "And I won't have time to hang out with you kits after I become one. So pay attention, and learn all you can from me now."
Silverkit was distraught. No more playing time with Flowerpaw? She hung her head. Flowerpaw gently butted her head against her shoulder. Silverkit looked up and noticed the mischief dancing in her eyes. "I'm only joking, Silverkit. Of course I'll still play with you!" Beekit leaped up from where she was sulking by a tree and bounded over. "Really? I'm so glad! I was going to miss you so much!" she meowed, her voice thick with relief.
Flowerpaw chuckled and licked her ear. "Well, enough fooling around. Do you kits want to hunt or what?" she purred. "Yes!" chimed Silverkit and Beekit together. "I'm going to catch a squirrel," said Beekit excitedly. Flowerpaw looked at her closely. "I think it might be too fast for you to catch," she meowed. Silverkit nodded wisely. "Maybe you could try and catch a mouse," she suggested. Beekit looked at the forest, her eyes lighting up with excitement. "That's a great idea!" she turned around and pelted into the forest, calling over her shoulder, "Thanks Silverkit!"
Flowerpaw began to look a little worried. "Don't go to far!" She yowled after her. "I want to catch a rabbit," said Silverkit. Flowerpaw eyed her legs thoughtfully. They were quite a bit longer than Beekit's short, stubby ones. "I think you might be able to catch one." Silverkit nodded eagerly. "But you'll have to stalk quietly and run quickly." "Show me your hunting crouch." She ordered. Silverkit immediately obeyed, feeling her muscles smoothly slip into the position she had seen the apprentices do so many times.
Flowerpaw nodded approvingly. "Your technique isn't bad, just remember to keep your tail off of the ground so it doesn't brush on anything." she advised. Silverkit lifted her tail off of the ground. "Good. Now remember, creep forward slowly and keep your pawsteps light." Flowerpaw commented. Silverkit excitedly sprung out of her crouch. "Thanks Flowerpaw!" she meowed.
Flowerpaw dipped her head. "I'm going to go check on your sister," And with that, she turned and trotted into the forest. Silverpaw looked around and shuddered. The forest suddenly felt very big, and she felt very small. She shook herself and set off towards a mossy tree. She flared her nostrils and felt all of the scents of the forest flood through her nose. She tried to remember what a rabbit smelled like. Silverkit continued padding through the trees, keeping her senses alert for any scent of rabbit.
A twig snapped and she pricked her ears, angling them towards the sound. A scent swept across her nose and she twitched her whiskers in satisfaction. Rabbit. She listened intently for a moment before pinpointing the rabbit about 4 foxlengths in front of her. She moved foreward slowly, keeping her body tight and her tail lifted slightly off of the ground.
As she crawled under a tree root, she spotted the rabbit. It was brown and white, and deliciously unaware of her presence. She judged the distance, getting ready to pounce, when a sharp pain ripped through her head. Silverkit tried her best to ignore it and focus on the rabbit. But the pain grew more intense and she gritted her teeth against it, throwing her head back and forth in an effort to clear it.
Digging her claws into the ground, she closed her eyes as the pain began to overwhelm her. And as quickly as it had come, the pain started to ebb away. She slowly became aware that she was crouched on the ground, but the ground was sandy and the air carried the taint of water. Silverkit blinked her eyes open and looked around in alarm.
She wasn't in the forest, she was standing on the lakeshore, a tail length from the water. She looked down and bit back a yowl of fear.____________-•o•-___________
