Silverkit's head jerked up at the sound of an impact. She looked over her shoulder and saw Sprucepaw lying on the ground. The fox was standing over him, ready to deliver the killing bite. Silverkit panicked. Fear gave way to adrenaline and she shot towards the fox, ramming her head into its side. The fox swatted her aside with one blow of its huge paw. She was so small, the fox was hardly fazed, but it caused a big enough distraction for Sprucepaw to slip out from underneath it.
With the fox now advancing on Silverkit, Sprucepaw leaped onto its back and dug in his claws. The fox yelped and thrashed, trying to throw him off. As Sprucepaw tussled with the fox, a yowl of defiance sounded from the edge of the forest. Silverkit looked up and her heart swelled with hope. Flowerpaw was charging down the shore, heading straight for the fox. She leaped, landing close to the fox's tail. She bit down hard, causing the fox to scream in pain.
In turn, the fox whipped around and caught her across the shoulder, drawing blood. Flowerpaw winced and shrank away. Throwing its head and twisting, the fox bucked and threw Sprucepaw off of its back. He landed next to Flowerpaw, and remained laying down, completely winded. Flowerpaw look down at him and back up, her eyes filled with a rage unlike anything Silverkit had ever seen before. She lunged forward and knocked the fox's front paws out from underneath it. The fox collapsed in a snarling heap. But before it could get up, Sprucepaw clambered unsteadily onto its head, swiftly delivering the killing bite.
Silverkit barely noticed the commotion of the final battle, only focusing on Beekit. Flowerpaw and Sprucepaw stumbled over to where Silverkit remained crouched by Beekit's body. "Is she dead?" asked Sprucepaw. Silverkit shook her head, too overwhelmed with grief to answer. Flowerpaw let out a wail and sagged to the ground. "It's all my fault! I went to check on her and lost her scent trail. I couldn't find her!"
She covered her face with her paws. "I never should've let her out of my sight. I should've remembered how curious she is." Sprucepaw walked over to Flowerpaw and flopped down beside her. He gave her a reassuring lick on her ear. "It's not your fault. It's mine." Flowerpaw looked up, her face contorted in pain and grief. "I should have never let you leave." Flowerpaw dropped her head back down. "It was both of our faults."she mumbled.
Silverkit watched their sorrowful exchange, completely overwhelmed by her own sadness. A few minutes of silence passed. Sprucepaw struggled to stand up. He looked down at Beekit, sorrow darkening his expression. "We need to take her back to camp. There's nothing we can do for her here." he said. Flowerpaw nodded and slowly stood up, wincing in pain as her stiffened muscles stretched to accommodate her movement.
She walked over to Beekit's body and gently lifted her by the scruff, placing her on Sprucepaw's back. She then went back for Silverkit. Flowerpaw picked her up, and together, the cats trudged back to camp. Silverkit didn't feel anything, and she didn't really care about anything. She only felt numb as she swung back and forth in Flowerpaw's grasp. After a few long, painful minutes of trekking through the forest, they reached the entrance of the camp.
Sprucepaw pushed inside first, with Flowerpaw close behind him. When they reached the clearing, Sprucepaw twisted his neck around to grab Beekit, and carefully laid her on the ground. Flowerpaw placed Silverkit on the ground, in between her and Sprucepaw. Cats had begun to slowly gather around them, wondering what had happened to the bedraggled group. Fiercekit tumbled out of the nursery, Daisynose close behind him.
He excitedly trotted over to them, his view obscured by the thick throng of cats. "Silverkit! Beekit! Is that you? Where have you guys been?" he called. Goldenmist and Applewish glanced at each other and tried to block him from reaching the center of the circle. He dodged them and stopped dead at the sight of his sister, his fur bristling in horror. "She's dead!" he yowled.
"Beekit's dead!" Oakfur pushed his way into the circle. Lionstar followed close behind him. "Move, please," he ordered the clustered cats. Oakfur crouched down next to Beekit, pressing his ear against her chest. After a long moment of silence, he stood up with a determined look on his face. "She's not dead. Not yet, at least." Silverkit felt joy flood through her.
Beekit wasn't dead! They would still be able to grow up and train together, just like they always wanted to!____________-•o•-___________
