Andromeda POV
It took me a bit to find an empty carriage, but there was only one carriage that wasn't full of students. A man was sleeping on one of the benches, but I couldn't do anything about that. I quickly shuttered all the windows and locked the door with a spell that my mother taught me. I pulled out the heavy pen from my pocket and examined it. "Wavebreaker," I breathed out the word, not wanting the sleeping man to wake. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught sight of a glimmering rainbow hanging in midair. As I turned my head to see what it was, I jumped back in fear when I saw my mother's head and shoulders floating in midair.
"Mom?! Why are you a floating head?!" I whimpered. Mom laughed before replying. "Andromeda, this is called an Iris Message. Remember that pouch of gold coins I gave you on the platform? The ones that didn't look like our currency?" I nodded my head and pulled out the small bag. "Those are drachmas; the ancient Greeks used them for money. If you ever need to talk to me and can't wait for a letter, make a rainbow and throw one of the drachmas into it. But you have to say this before throwing the coin: Oh Fleecy, do me a solid. And then you must say who you want to speak with, or what place you want to see. Now, have you clicked your pen yet?"
Stranger's POV
My eyes are just slightly opened, open enough to see a young girl conversing with a woman in a rainbow. They're talking about drachmas, iris messaging, and clicking pens. I wonder.
Andromeda POV
"No, I haven't. I was just about to, though." Mom nodded and motioned for me to go ahead. I took a deep breath and clicked the pen. Only now, it wasn't a pen. It was a three-foot-long sword made of what looked like bronze. It had carvings with ancient letters and images of waves. The blade was well balanced, not too heavy, but not too light, either. The handle fits in my hand, almost as if I had worn it away myself after years of use. "Mom, what is this? Why did you give me a pen that turns into a sword?"
"Your father wanted me to give it to you on your eleventh birthday, but I thought it best to wait until you left for school. Do you remember what it's called?" I nod. "Say the name, dearest."
"Kymatothráfsti." Suddenly, the sword was back in my hand as a pen. "Whenever you click the pen, it will become the sword. When you say its name, it will turn back into a pen. And you can never lose it. If you drop it, it will always come back to you in your pocket or bag. I wish you the very best of luck, dear, and I hoped to speak with you soon. I love you, dear."
"I love you too, mom. Bye." I waved my hand through the rainbow, and it dissipated into the air. I was startled by the clearing of a throat, and I jumped in the air with a shriek.
