My back hurt more with this pregnancy than it did when I was pregnant with King. It hurt so bad, getting out of bed felt impossible but laundry needed to be done and I had a doctors' appointment in a few hours that I couldn't miss. With sore muscles and an aching back, I crawled out of bed and made my way to the bathroom. King was quiet enough which meant he was either still asleep or him and Bay were watching a movie. I started the shower and began peeling off my clothes when there was a loud, sudden knock on the front door. I said a silent prayer Bay would answer it but when there was another obnoxious knock, I groaned, wrapped a towel around my pregnant body and stomped thru my room towards the living room.
Two men wearing jeans and button up shirts with sweat stains under their arms waited for me to open the door. The first man was much taller than the second. He had dark skin and a clean shaved face. The second had creamy white skin and bright red hair that was cut short. I opened the door with an attitude on full display.
"Good morning, ma'am. I'm Detective Long and this is my partner, Detective McMorran." The officer with flawless brown skin, Detective Long, outstretched his hand towards me but pulled it back when I didn't make any attempt to shake his hand.
"We were wondering if we could come inside and talk for a few minutes,"
"I was about to shower and make my son breakfast. What is there to talk about at 7 in the morning?" my voice was still raspy from sleep but I was awake enough to notice the uncomfortable feeling in the pit of my stomach. I glanced behind me, noticing King and Bay were not in the living room. Both officers kept their eyes trained on my face and not the fact I was standing in front of them in a bath towel.
"We'd like to talk inside, if that's okay," when I stepped to the side and closed the door after they were inside, I retreated to my bedroom to put on a pair of sweats and a t-shirt. Irritation was bubbling over in the pit of my stomach but it only got worse when I came back to the living room to see both officers looking at a picture of Kohle in their hands. Bay quietly closed the door to King's bedroom and backed away slowly. The officers looked up when I was a few feet away from them. When they saw my eyes were on Bay and the oversized t-shirt she wore, they turned their heads to get a look at her beauty too.
"They're detectives." I nodded my head at the two men sitting on the couch and Bay gave a small smile and padded quietly to the kitchen. She let her eyes sparkle at me and it was almost enough to make the irritation in my body evaporate but then the smaller of the two men opened his mouth and agitated me even more.
"Could you tell us your relationship with Kohle Martin?" his question was simple enough and yet, it made me uncomfortable. I sat on the edge of the couch and listened to the sound of pots and pans being placed on the stove. Kohle's face came to mind. Why were they asking me questions about him? Was he in trouble?
"He's our boyfriend. Why?"
"Our?" Detective Long's eyes lingered over me and then on Bay who was still in the kitchen, listening. I felt more than annoyed with them in my living room. My skin was turning a shade of pink and the growl in my stomach added to the bad mood that was setting in.
"That's obviously what I said."
"Do either of you know his whereabouts right now?" McMorran asked, his hands running over his well-worn jeans. Bay continued pulling things out for breakfast, ignoring their questions and I sat on the couch with an uncomfortable silence sitting between us. The honest to God truth was no, I didn't know where Kohle was. But I wanted to know why they were asking about him.
