Chapter Seven
Donavan
After Donavan left with Ricky, he brought him along to pick up Jr from school. Since he had been busy all week they didn't have time to pick up a present for one of his friend's birthday party that night. Donavan Jr. wanted it to be the best present ever, so they settled for the Hot Wheels collection; and Donavan bought Jr a set as well so they could play together. He even bought Ricky a few things seeing as how his parents rarely had money, and if they did it was going to the support of their bad habits and partial bills.
When Donavan moved to Baltimore he had signed up for a mentoring program to help troubled kids to not fall victim to the streets. He figured with his authority figure and some much needed male attention, then whoever he was assigned to wouldn't feel left out.
After they bought the toys he took the boys out to a nice place to eat before going home. Donavan had dropped Ricky off at his house after he dropped Jr off at the party. By the time he had made it back home it was already 7:30. He had took a quick shower and began preparing the food. By 8:15 he had just took the steaks out the oven to flip them, when he heard a knock at the door.
He was feeling excited to have Justice over again. Their time with each other last week was comfortable and fun. He enjoyed being in her presence.
He wiped his hands on the hand towel before shuffling towards the door; but when he opened it, he was in for a rude awakening.
"Where the hell have you been?" He asked with a frown on his face. She pushed her way inside ignoring his comment.
"Hello to you too Spade. Where's my nephew?" She asked kicking off her shoes by the door and tossing her purse on the stand.
"He's at a birthday party. Where have you been the last few days, I've been trying to call you. Sy's school even tried calling you last week. He had gotten food poisoning and I was in the middle of an important meeting." He closed the door and made his way back to the kitchen with his sister following.
"Around. I had to take care of a few things, plus I went to go visit Uncle James last week." She said as she leaned up against the counter. "Looks like I came right on time. What we havin'?"
"You aren't having anything. I am having dinner with a friend. So good bye." He dismissed. He placed the steaks back in the oven after adding a few more seasonings. He then began to mix the ingredients for the salad before placing it in the refrigerator.
"What? Big bro has a hot date tonight? Let me find out." She laughed. "Aight, I ain't gonna intrude. I just came to get some stuff I left here."
"You got the apartment?" He asked turning off the corn and covering it with the lid. Darnella has been living with a friend for the past year, and been house hoping for the last few months. She was in Baltimore for school, going to Morgan State University, majoring in Psychology. She stayed on campus her first year, but thought it would be better if she moved off campus and got a job. Just so she could get a bigger refund check.
"Yup. I'll be in Target City. I'm on the ground floor so not many steps to go up." She shrugged.
"Well that's good. You gonna keep this one right? I can't keep bailing you out of your troubles every time you get in way over your head."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. I got a job down at Northeast Market. Today was my first day. I'll make sure to keep this one too." She said with a big smile.
"That's great. Which store?" He asked as he turned the oven off and took the steaks out. "Perfect." He said to himself.
