Chapter Nine
Justice
"I say we move to a new place, those cops have been gettin' a lor heavy lately nd I see people startin' to get a lor antsy around dis bitch. Only a mattah time till dey crack nd we all go down." JD aka Slick spoke up.
Justice looked around at her loyal workers—well as loyal as one could get—taking in their comments and concerns. She's been spending a lot of time at the trap house trying to make sure that things go smoothly and that she remain three steps ahead of the police. It seems as if they've gained vital information in the past two weeks and things have been getting a little heated with her men.
She's kept her distance from Donavan since that day at his house. She still hasn't told him if she'll go with him to his sibling's pre-birthday bash; which was four days away. He would stop by the rec center every now-and-then, to check on Ricky and join their discussions; yet they wouldn't say much to each other.
"Okay, anyone else got somethin to say 'bout this?" She questioned scanning the many faces around her.
"I agree with Slick, even though we've kept a low profile, I can clearly see a few people starting to get a little scared." Skillz spoke up. "Word on the street is that the new detective has been pushing his way through to some people, which is why the cops getting so close."
Keeping her face masked, Justice couldn't help the rapid beating of her heart at the mention of Donavan. Last week she discovered that he was in fact involved in trying to bring down her place of business; which was another reason she's been avoiding him. It didn't help matters that Mother Nature just passed and now she was hornier than a sex craved teenager.
"Yeah, nd one ov dem unda cova niggas tried to get at me the ova day. Askin all types a questions 'bout you Rocky. Askin' shit I aint even know." Duck fumed. Justice raised a single eyebrow at the statement just made.
"What kind of questions?"
"Do yu got kids, a husband, boyfriend, where yu live, who stay wit yu. All types ov personal shit. And I tol'em I aint see shit, so I'on't know shit." He said shrugging his shoulders.
Justice stood there and stared at him long and hard, trying to get a proper reading from him. Lately Duck has been off the wall with information, and it didn't sit right with her that the cops already got to him. There's no telling what he said. Yet, if that was all they really asked him, then she was still in the clear, unless the stupid nigga slipped up and revealed that she was a female and not a male.
According to her information they were still searching for a male, so she was able to breathe just a bit. But then it registered in her mind exactly what he had just said. Husband, boyfriend? Those weren't questions you ask about a male; so maybe he did reveal the one piece of information they have been keeping under wraps. That sent a red flag off in her head.
"What questions did they ask you again?" She asked slowly standing from her leaning position on the table.
Duck gave her a slightly confused look but answered nonetheless. "If yu got kidz, a man, married, where yu live, who stayin wit yu. All types ov shit." He shrugged.
She felt all eyes on her as she slowly made her way towards him staring him down like she was a predator and he was her prey. He couldn't see her eye but Duck could feel the daggers that were being thrown into his heart causing him a slow painful death. He knew it was a matter of time for he turned up missing, he just hoped she'd spare his life just this once. She slowly walked back to her position at the front. The silence was thick in the air and everyone was on the edge of their seat not knowing what she'd do next.
