"...The four-time-winner of the Square King Cup tournament, the absolute king, Emperor!"
Gloves turned his phone to Goggles and his team. "You have to beat him to win the championship!"
Headphones was the most nervous of everyone there. Just the thought alone of the monarch team approaching them frightened her. What if they weren't good enough? The reputation the blue team had finally began to build would be lost. The four would be known as idiots yet again, unable to prove what they were capable of doing. She gulped and tried shaking her head out of it.
"I do think we've trained enough by now to be prepared, but if any of you don't feel ready we still have the rest of today," Glasses addressed. "Tomorrow is the real competition!"
Goggles took a deep breath and smiled. "I'm sure we can beat them if we work together!"
Rider stood aside quietly, hoping they could maintain the good attitude in case they had to compete against the top team in the first day. Gloves, who was also quiet, had zoned out, remembering the time he had met Emperor himself...
The neon green inkling had decided to go through a spiritual retreat in the mountains, hoping that spending time alone would help him in some way. But, he wasn't alone — there was a taller, older inkling training with a new weapon prototype which he called 'splat dualies' at the time. The milky eminence jacket and boots were all too familiar, and the figure became recognizable.
"Emperor?!"
He had caught the King's attention, his amber eyes almost piercing through him. Emperor was a lot more charismatic in person, although he retained his intimidating demeanor from being a turf war champion. He offered to give these 'dualies' to the less experienced inkling, encouraging for him to use them in the next tournament. How could he say no? And as if Emperor's looks weren't enough to convince him, he would still have a brand new weapon to battle with!
It was time Gloves put his dualies to good use. Perhaps he would be able to prove himself worthy of not just winning the tournament, but of winning Emperor's attention once again...
"The S4 lost?!"
The most heated battle in the tournament had taken place: The Monarch Team versus The S4. Fans of both teams gathered to watch the event unravel, shocked to see the best in Inkopolis Plaza utterly defeated. Would there be any hope for the few remaining teams?
"...Rider?" Goggles asked the yellow-green inkling, who had been watching the two teams compete with him.
He raised an eyebrow. "Hm?"
"What will happen once we go up against Emperor?"
Rider gave it some thought. He exhaled. "Don't worry about it," he began, "since you and I will be fighting in the finals." His confidence put Goggles at ease.
Eventually the time came, and the semifinals were going to be Emperor's team versus Rider's, and Goggles' team versus Gloves'.
"I know Rider will win! I've fought against him!" But Goggles' positive attitude did not help guarantee a victory for the yellow-green team.
Despite being irritated because of his opponent, Emperor kept his cool. "A king never gets flustered," he would say.
Unfortunately for Gloves, he lost the match to Goggles. His hope of getting Emperor's attention remained, as making it into the semifinals was impressive itself. He still wished to get to know him personally, perhaps through Goggles if he managed to win.
The next match was intense. It was the final round, and all those familiar with the blue team gathered up front. Rider did not care what others had to think, and took the blue inkling's battle strategies seriously, unlike most at the square. And even though some tactics were quite ridiculous, like pantsing Emperor, they seemed to work. The blue team was victorious!
"The Square King Cup's champions are...
The idiot— I mean, the blue team!"
All the team members but Glasses celebrated, as he was too busy being irritated at the fact that they were still known as the 'idiot team'.
Of course, this victory deserved a celebration, so what better thing to do than to eat as a group?
A portion of the prize money was used to fix up the Crust Bucket truck, which is where they decided to eat at. Every table had crusty seanwiches and deep fried shwaffles, as well as a few drinks for those who had tickets. Even Emperor's team showed up, which showed the King's change of perspective. Rider sat at the blue team's table before anyone else could, his seat in between Goggles' and Bobble's.
Glasses was the first to speak. "I'd say it was a good tournament." Multiple voices agreed.
"It was fun! And we helped Emperor's team find the fun in battling too!" Goggles exclaimed, eagerly munching his waffle.
Headphones put her drink down. "What do you all think about that Emperor guy?" she asked.
This question lead to a good amount of discussion. They brought up how Emperor had changed after that battle, and how his teammates worked with him. Goggles was well into the conversation, but his train of thought was interrupted by the feeling of something on his thigh.
"Woah!"
His teammates brought their attention to the blue inkling. He stared at them blankly with his cheeks puffed out. They continued to talk, and Goggles finally realized what this certain thing was. Rider turned his head away from everyone.
"Shut up, Goggles!" he whispered. The two didn't look at each other to avoid any arising suspicion. His warm hand glided against the other's milky skin while they tried to act normal in front of everyone else. The blue inkling felt puzzled but excited regarding where this was going as Rider rubbed his thigh under the table. He spread his legs to give Rider more access as to what he could touch, which he took perfect advantage of. A hand went into Goggles' shorts, causing his face to redden. The yellow-green inkling stroked his inner thigh teasingly. To be honest, he was having a little too much fun with him. He payed close attention to the other struggling to keep a straight face, before groping the growing bulge between his legs.
"A-Ah..."
Goggles couldn't take the stimulation anymore, making him gasp audibly. Glasses glanced over at him curiously but didn't say anything. There was a sudden clank as Headphone's fork hit the floor during the conversation. She sighed disappointedly. "Aw, now I have to get a new one..."
The green and blue inklings across from her, although in their own little bubble, noticed her looking under the table to pick up her plastic utensil. Rider was quick to remove his hand from the other's pants. The waistband snapped back and was just barely loud enough to hear, making them both falter. Goggles quickly shoved a piece of food in his mouth in case he was asked about his odd behavior. Rider simply shoved his hands in his pockets.
Someone decided to say something at last. "Goggles?" the inkling with the retro specs asked. "Are you..." He didn't finish his sentence.
"I'm fine!" Goggles said a little too loudly through a mouthful of food. He quickly swallowed, his face still flustered from before. "I'm fine," he repeated, "I just remembered I—uh, forgot to lock my front door."
"Oh." Glasses nodded his head slowly, "Well we were about to head out. Maybe you should go and..."
Goggles still felt skittish. "Yeah, good idea."
"Rider, you coming?" Headphones asked as they all started to pick up their things.
"Eh, I think I'll stay here for a minute." He quickly glanced over at Goggles. It was subtle, and hopefully no one had put too much thought into it.
"Yeah, uh, I'll catch up with you guys later!" Goggles lied.
"Bye-bye!" waved Bobble as the group walked away.
Once they were gone, Goggles and Rider exchanged knowing looks. They both knew exactly what they were thinking.
"My place?" Rider raised an eyebrow casually, as if he had done this many times before. The blue inkling wondered how he could be so smooth.
"Y-Yeah, sure. Your place." Still red in the face, he took Rider's hand and pulled him up off the table, and with a final sigh of bliss, they made their way out of the square. The two were sure they were out of sight, content that they could at last have another night alone, with only each other as company.
Aloha stood behind the far end of the food truck, his eyes narrowed in suspicion. He finally walked away, unable to stop the hundreds of questions running through his head.
