Kara's POV

I dipped my fingers into a pot of black grease paint. I looked up at the mirror, taking my fingers, I smeared the paint over my eyes and down my cheeks. The paint was thick and opaque. I dreaded taking it off, but I needed it to conceal my identity. My hair was up in a ponytail, and I wore a simple sweatshirt and pants.

"You shouldn't keep doing this," his voice echoed in my head, "It's not safe."

I tried to ignore him, but every day since he left, again, Mon-el's voice got louder and louder in my head.

"You know why I do this," I said out loud. "You go away when I do this."

He didn't speak for a moment. "You know I would not want you doing this."

I washed my hands and grabbed the towel to dry them. "Well you're not here right now," I said. "You left."

I walked out into my apartment and flew out the window. I always receive the location of the fight three days prior. The guy that runs these fights, Mr. Silver, loves me. He always bets on me, and I never disappoint him. I always win.

The fight was at an old warehouse this time. Ever since I started fighting, Mr. Silver has chosen locations with an open skylight so I can fly in. I hovered over the building and lowered myself into the fighting cage. I was greeted with cheers from National City's wealthiest. I looked upon the crowd.

When did you become this person? I thought to myself. Who are you, participating in illegal alien fights?

Every single time I came here, that thought would pop up in my mind. But every single time the image of him in his white collared shirt would flash in front of me, and I would remember why I did these fights.

"You should leave," his voice said.

I can't. I thought, replying to him. When I'm here, you stay quiet. I need the quiet.

I looked outside the cage and found Mr. Silver sitting on his special chair, surrounded by guards. He always wore a black suit, black tie. He grinned and nodded at me.

I nodded back and the gates opened for the opposing alien to walk in. It was huge, eight feet tall. Almost no resemblance of a man. Its claws were four inches long, it's skin, green and jagged.

"That's a Kryptonian cave beast. Its skin is laced with Kryptonite. Kara, this is not safe." Mon-el said.

I did not listen to him, I couldn't. My salvation from his voice was standing in front of me, I couldn't let that slip away.

Suddenly the beast launched at me, its claws coming toward my face. I dodged it and punched it in the side. I used my heat vision and aimed at its eye, but it resisted and came at me, full force. Its claws punctured my upper arm. I heard the audience gasp. I had never bled in the ring.

I was angry. I used all of my strength right at him, constantly being held back by the Kryptonite. We battled for a few more minutes, but eventually, I kicked the beast in its head and knocked it out. My victory was followed by cheers. A couple of people came into the ring to drag the beast away. I felt weak from being around the Kryptonite. I looked up at Mr. Silver, he sighed with relief, and I stood there out of breath. I walked over to the edge of the cage, my fingers intertwined with the wiring.

Mr. Silver held a wad of cash in one hand and a roll of bandages in the other. "You had me worried for a second." He said.

"You know I never disappoint" I replied, reaching my hand through the cage, taking the roll of bandages from his hand.

He looked down at the cash I left in his hand and back at me. "Why won't you ever let me pay you?" he asked. "You keep the crowds coming! The money flowing. Let me give you something."

"I don't do it for the money," I told him. And I lept off the ground, flying through the roof.

The wind pressed against my face as I flew back to my loft. It was relieving to not have Mon-el's voice in my head, reminding me of what I lost, the life I could never have.

I landed in my apartment and took my sweatshirt off. My arm was bleeding heavily, red spreading through the gray fabric. I took off the jacket and threw it under my bed. I took the roll of bandages and wrapped my arm and my shoulder to secure it. Just then my phone started ringing. I walked over to the counter and picked it up.

"Hello?" I said.

"Kara," it was Alex, "There's an emergency. Reports are saying a rogue alien downtown"

She sounded more worried than usual. "Alex, what's the matter?" I asked.

"Ten people are already dead," she said.

"I'm coming," I replied. Using my super speed I changed into my suit and washed off the greasepaint. I waited for a moment, to see if his voice would return. I sighed with relief when he stayed silent, and I  flew out the window and to downtown.
