Kara's POV

It was the summer solstice. I woke up extra early to do what I could for the city. I stopped three burglaries, helped the police with a car chase, stopped quite a few muggers, and even got a cat down from a tree. I wanted to help a lot before I had to go.

I knew Mon-el thought he could use the beast to save me, but I couldn't live with myself if I forced another living thing to die for me.

-4:15 pm-

I flew into the DEO balcony and walked down the stairs.

"Hey, Kara!" Winn called out, walking up next to me.

"Hey!"

"So I think I'm really close to hacking this." He sounded so enthusiastic. "I just have a few more lines of Kryptonian coding to get through and I think we got it!"

He showed me his tablet with his work so far. I read some of the lines of code. They looked off, words and numbers that I had never studied when I was on Krypton. I just looked at him and smiled. "That's awesome, Winn."

We walked up to the round table, Alex and J'onn already there.

"I think we've found a way to capture the beast," J'onn said. "When Mon-el told us he might have seen one around, we developed a way to trace its Kryptonite signature. It went off the radar for today, but I think we can find it soon."

"We'll find a way around this, Kara," Alex told me, looking more confident than a couple days ago.

I gave the most convincing smile I could. "That all sounds great guys," I paused. "Thank you so much for trying to help me. It means a lot."

"Well of course!" Winn chimed in. "What's family for?"

I put a bigger smile on my face. I was really going to miss them.

"Hey, I think I'm going to go back to my loft for a little while. It's been a pretty busy morning." I said.

They all said some quick goodbyes and started walking away. I watched them as they went to do their jobs. I was glad they didn't know I was going. I would have hated to see them so sad.

I flew back to my loft and started to get ready. I slipped on a simple white, long-sleeved shirt and loose white pants. It was similar to what I wore when I left Krypton. I didn't want to die as Supergirl. I wanted to go as Kara Zor-el, protector of Earth and savior of Krypton. If Kryptum really could rebuild Krypton, my sacrifice would be worth it.

I took out the recorder with all the goodbyes I had finished making. I placed it on the kitchen counter along with a note about what I was about to do and where to find my body.

I looked at the clock. It was 4:45 pm now. Mon-el would be coming at five. He would find the note and he would know what to do.

I walked over to the door and unlocked it, leaving the door slightly open. He would find it suspicious and walk right in. I then walked over to the open window and took to the skies.

I embraced the feeling of flying, took it all in. I loved flying, I had never realized how much. I was above the hustle and bustle of the city. I could be myself, no secret identities, the wind across my face, the floating feeling of being free.

I landed at the power plant. Kryptum was already there, holding a huge kryptonite dagger.

"I knew you would show up, Kara," he said, flipping the kryptonite in his hand.

"I want to protect this planet from you," I replied, "whatever it takes."

"You made the right choice, " he reassured me.

He slowly walked over to me. I could feel weaker with every step he took, the kryptonite getting closer and closer to me. "Here's how this is going to go," he started. "Now this is a very special dagger. Designed by your father in fact! Once I kill you with this, " He held up the dagger, "It will become supercharged with your life force."

He pulled at the end of the dagger, the handle unlatching revealing some sort of plug. "I just plug that into me and presto magic Krypton will rise again." He smiled. He was close to me now. I could feel his breath on my face. "You ready?" He whispered, smiling.

"May no harm come to Earth," I said, looking at him in the eyes. "And may Krypton rise again."

"For last words, that wasn't so bad," he chuckled.

I turned my head up to look at the sky. It was such a clear day, the sky was so blue. I thought of what was beyond this sky. All the planets I had visited with my family. My mom was up there somewhere on Argo. All those people would be getting their planet back. I thought of Alex. I thought of Winn, J'onn, Eliza, Jeremiah. I thought of Mon-el.

I felt a tear start to well up in my eye. I didn't want to go, but I knew I needed to.

And just like that, I felt a hot, searing pain in my lower abdomen. The dagger piercing through my stomach, through my back. He removed the dagger as swiftly as he plunged it into my body. I stood there for a second, my face unmoving. I felt the tear travel down my cheek as I fell to the concrete.

Lying on my back, I kept my eyes on the skies. Everything started to go white. I felt floaty, my pain numbing, my body going cold. The cold concrete was my deathbed.

"Kara!" I heard Mon-el yell out.

Even in death is voice was in my head, but this time I wanted him to keep talking. I didn't want him to go quiet. I wanted him to be here with me, to hold me, to talk to me. And a part of me wanted to wake up after this, him by my side.

And just as I could feel myself give in, just as I felt the last breath exit my lungs. Just as the world went black, I felt someone grab my hand.
