Link's door stopped making noise, as someone outside had been knocking. He pulled away from Zelda, who was looking down at the dark brown wooded floor, and walked down the steps and tracing the tan wall with his fingers. When he reached the door, he hesitantly turned the nob and was surprised to see Purah and Robbie.
"Welcome, Purah," Link greeted, still blushing from his moment with Zelda. He nodded towards Robbie, "Hello, Robbie...What brings you two here today?"
"Well," Purah began, "We heard that Divine Beast Vah Ruta stopped working as well as Vah Naboris...mind if we come along? You kinda need some Ancient Tech experts to fix anything, Click-Snap!"
"Oh thank you! We were actually thinking about asking you about that" Link happily responded, relieved that Purah and Robbie didn't point out his face.
"Zelda," Link called into the cottage, "mind if they come?"
She chirped, "Oh, Not at all!" As she gracefully walked down the steps, looking like the princess she is.
Link opened the door wider to reveal more of him and the princess and offered for the guests to enter, bit they declined.
"So, when do we plan to go to Zora's Domain?" Robbie inquired.
"We were actually planning on going today," Zelda began in response as she pointed towards the sky, "but it seems that time has passed on us after we ran into a little *ahem* 'accident'"
Purah and Robbie looked concerned for a moment, before Purah said, "Well I say we should depart in two days and meet at the Hateno Tower at noon...does that sound alright?" Every one nodded, and Purah continued, "I also think that Robbie should borrow the Sheikah Slate aswell because his journey from Akkala is quite long, so it would be best if he could return it to you two when we all meet. Farewell!" Purah said as she left without waiting for a response.
Robbie stood at the door as Link went back in as he ruffled through his rubbish to find the slate. When he returned with it, Robbie took it and said his farewells.
"Bye, you two lovebirds!" He teased as he hopped away, making Link and Zelda blush as the door shut.
Silence. Absolute silence in the warm presence of the candle glow in the cottage. Link still faced the door, afraid to turn around and face Zelda, who was behind him. Link breathed out in the awkward silence. He glanced behind him, only to meet her bright, green gaze.
"Zelda..." Link nervously began, "What do you think of me? How do you feel about me? Do...d-do you feel the same way I feel about you?"
Zelda's eyes looked as if they glowed—and it was not because of the glossy coat over them as tears were beginning to fall. Pity swept over Link. He hated seeing her cry, for it meant sadness and despair. Mourning for something that Link couldn't sense—of all the things he knew.
Zelda, between sniffles and stifling a burst of cries, began, "It was because of you that I could awaken my power in the first place—the power that would seal Ganon away for a century...it was because of you. You were the last person on Earth that meant something to me, for father had...had d-died...*sniff* and then Urbosa...a-and...and then all of my other friends were gone!" Zelda clenched her fists, one by her side and the other over her chest as she looked down, not letting the tears escape her eyelids.
"Link...to see you g-go too...along with everything else was too much, and I just couldn't take anymore," Zelda began crying, "I'm sorry! Of all people...I shouldn't be crying like this! I-I..."
She fell into Link's arms, for them both it felt like a Deja Vu, and then Link's empathy for his princess took over.
Link caressed Zelda's forehead, "It's okay, you can cry..." he softly whispered, "If anyone deserves to cry, it's you. You're the one who's been fighting for one hundred years while I've been sleeping...it's okay..." he repeated, "It's okay..."
Link thought about his own, miserable life and was surprised to feel a warm tear streaming down his cheek. He embraced Zelda tighter for comfort, only to find himself sobbing as much as Zelda. He didn't deserve to be here. It was too much for anyone and he's only caused people trouble. It was his fault that he had recklessly failed to protect Princess Zelda and had her fight the Calamity while he had to recover and loose his memories of his past.
Link lifted one arm at the thought of his uselessness and wiped his face. The action was useless, however, because his face streaked with more tears. He pulled away from the hug and looked away, not allowing Zelda to see him in this state.
Zelda seemed better when Link saw her in the corner of his teary eyes. Link stepped further away in humiliation. He sank to the floor against the fall and childishly hid his face into his knees, which he held tight. Link struggled to hold back his wail as he shivered in his stifling.
Zelda stepped forth and knelt down in front of Link—her still-wet cheeks pink with crying and sorrow. She held her hands out to Link's face and comforted him, which pacified his sobbing. Link looked up a trapped himself in a daze staring at Zelda's green eyes. He blinked, in realization.
Does she really care for me? Link thought. He uncurled himself from his little ball wiped Zelda's tears away. Her lips drew back into a sad smile—Link returning a sad grin. He chuckled the most depressing kind.
"Don't you dare tell anyone that I cried—got it?" Link joked.
"No promises," Zelda replied, "Honestly, this is a scene worth writing about in the history books,"
Link felt his face get warm again and nudged his head gently into Zelda's as a playful gesture.
He welcomed her sweet, warm breath as he said, "I'm sorry," Zelda looked puzzled. Link continued, "I'm sorry I wasn't much use when the Calamity was still around,"
Link felt his face get warmer again as he felt another stream of fresh, warm tears run down his cheeks and drip off his nose and chin.
Zelda gave a sympathetic look, telling him everything he needed to hear. She forgave him, and didn't think it was his fault.
Zelda leaned closer and quickly kissed Link's nose, making Link feel as hot as a fire.
"I like seeing you blush," Zelda giggled, "It lets me know how you truly act around me,"
Link gave a mischievous smirk, "You think you're intimidating me?" He began playfully, "You're the one who keeps missing!"
Zelda looked utterly confused and couldn't react to Link lunging forward, knocking them both to the floor. Link's cheeky expression barely warned Zelda, for Link's actions surprised her. His head dropped down until their lips met, and a warm feeling tingled deep inside Link, making him feel loved.
He pulled away from Zelda, who had a disappointed look, and Link aimed his arms after her waist to tickle her.
The laughing between the two rung for the entire time of dusk, until soon, twilight shone overhead as the golden sun disappeared, tucked behind the purple and pink horizon. Bands of stars and other mystery lights glittered and gleamed above Hateno Village, sweeping early darkness over the mild winter landscapes of Hyrule.
Link and Zelda walked down the yellow-lit village, not holding hands, as they looked around at the shops and houses. Children still ran around, playing their games until they spotted the couple, and ran over to them.
"Princess Zelda!" A little girl exclaimed, "Can you tell us another story? Can you tell us? Pleeeeeeeease?!"
Zelda laughed, "I told you, I've already run out of stories...but I bet Link has some to say!" She shot a glance at Link, who was watching the small group of children tug at Zelda's soft pink dress.
"Link! Link!" They all chanted as they ran towards him and grabbed his hands, swinging on them, "Tell us something! Tell us!"
Link almost collapsed to the ground with the shifting weight of the five children crawling all over him. Zelda giggle as she watched him struggle. Link caught her watching and knew that he was for sure love-struck.
All the children seemed to notice that Link was inanimate, and they all followed his gaze.
"Link's in love!" One of the boys shouted.
A few of the children made pucker faces at him while one of them ran away, notifying the others that he was grabbing a mistletoe from the upcoming Christmas decorations.
Link's face turned red as he tried to quiet the chanting children.
Link's in Looove! Link's in Looove! They sang as they marched in circles around Zelda and Link.
The fifth child came back with a small plant that had dark, green leaves and bright, red berries.
"Do you find her pretty?" One tiny girl asked. Another responded, "Of course he does! Look at the way his face turns red! He's crazy for the princess"
Confused as to how these wild children know more about this than he does, Link scratched the back of his neck, and then a startling thought came to his head.
He whipped his head around in search for the kid with the tiny plant, before he spotted the boy sitting on top of a lamppost, holding the mistletoe over the blushing knight and the clueless princess.
Link gazed into the princess, who's attention was drawn to him. With a nervous look, Link pointed upward at the mistletoe above the two, and Zelda immediately blushed.
The children seemed to be psychics, all of them, for they saw the expressions on Link and Zelda's face.
Kiss! Kiss! They chanted until their parents, to Link and Zelda's rescue, took them away for bedtime.
The whole village was watching, expectantly, as Link and Zelda stared into each other's eyes. Link stepped forward, unsure about whether or bot he should show this to the public. Everyone on the streets were watching, so Link decided he didn't care. His body lunged forth and embraced Zelda into a kiss. Both their eyes were closed as though it was natural.
The village began clapping and the children cheering. When the two had pulled apart from each other, both red as ever, an old woman came walking up and said, "May the Goddess Hylia bless the two of you with loving gifts as I hope to live long enough to see you wedding,"
Link's face felt as if it wasn't even there anymore by now as images of him and Zelda living peacefully together, then images of the two when well-groomed and saying their vows, and then images...of ...well...what turned Link's face blood-red as he pushed the thought away. Then an image in particular shown in his mind, flooding his view...it was of him and Zelda...holding a baby with dirty blond hair and bright teal eyes, a mix of the green that Zelda had and the blue that lay in Link's eyes. He hugged the image with his mind as took Zelda's hand and walked her home.
Before stepping on the bridge, he looked up at the stars and mouthed, "Thank you," as if to the goddesses. He closed his eyes as he welcomed the feelings around him. The warmth of Zelda's hand wrapped around his as she leaned her head against his shoulder. The cool, crisp breeze of the mild winter's air. The chirping of fireflies and the distant trickle of water in the bottom of the stone crevice that the bridge to Link's home sat over.
The feeling stayed with him the whole night, as he calmly listened to Zelda's breathing across from his. Link then frowned. What was the future going to hold?
