It was 2:30 am.
And Shane was staring blindly at his phone. Waiting for it to ring. Or to explode.
Noel left him at 7 pm last night. And she hasn't called or texted since.
It could mean two things. One, Noel liked her date. And she was still there. Enjoying her special night. And second, it was a disaster.
He could chose to feel happy about it, that Noel was single still, and he had a chance.
If only, he could choose.
But he had no choice here. He knew he'll feel pissed of it happens. He never was, nor will ever be, selfish, about his love for Noel. He wanted Noel to be happy and move forward with her life just as much as he wanted her to stay with him.
Maybe she was happy, and her happiness wasn't him.
Shane was having a hard time making a mind. He wished he could simply call her and ask if everything was fine or not. She won't even smell a fish.
To Noel, Shane was just a best friend, she couldn't suspect if the thought of them was nothing to her.
He dialed her number, at last.
It went straight to voice mail.
He did it again. And it again went to voice mail.
'Call me as soon as you are done with your make out sessions.' he almost shouted. The thought of what he said roasted his viscera till it burned. But it still was better than a possible disaster. Noel was a disaster herself. To all the boys who couldn't wait long enough to know her.
He stared at point blank for another thirty minutes. Waiting for a text or a call.
When nothing came, he left another message, 'Did it go wrong? Are you fine? Just talk to me.'
Maybe he was overthinking. Maybe everything was fine and Noel was peacefully sleeping through this 3 am.
Maybe.
But then, why was this moment like a stone in his shoe?
