The phone call

More than a week passed.
Of Noel, no sign.

It was almost evening and Shane was laying on his bed and staring into nothingness. There was nothing else he could do.
There was a picture of Shane and Noel on his study desk, an old and ragged photograph of them taken during a fancy dress party. It was Noel's birthday. The atmosphere of the photograph was all too cringy to look at.
Now, he was looking at that picture of them, but his focus was loose. Everything was a blur. And he cared none about bringing his eyes back to life, back to focus.
Just then, his phone rang. Since the past one week, Shane would jump anxiously whenever his phone rang. It could be Noel, he always thought. But being brutally honest to himself, he seldom believed his own thoughts.
He looked at the blindingly unfamiliar number which popped up on his screen.
'Hello, Shane here.' he received the call. He realized how croaky his voice sounded.
'Shane? Where are you dear?' the voice was anxious.
Shane had heard it before.
'Mrs. Hastings? Is it you?' Shane asked, without breath.
'Yes... Is Noel with you right now?' she asked, 'we reached this morning from her grandmother's. But we came to find to the house locked.'
Shane was quiet. He couldn't think straight.
'Is she with you Shane? Say something.' there was uneasiness in her voice. It was as if she knew her daughter wasn't there.
'No, Mrs. Hastings. She is not.' Shane admitted.
It started to sink in. Noel wasnt with her family. She wasn't home.
What started as a normal thing, became conspicuous all of a sudden, and now it was just too obvious to be unbelievable.
Noel had gone missing.
