In this fic, Michael is deaf so he knows sign language. When you see something in italics and bolded that's what Michael is signing to someone. If it says that Michael "says" something it's his phone speaking for him.
The concept of the 'Name Sign' is that only a deaf person can tell you what yours is. Like, with mine, you make the letter 'a' (a fist with your thumb resting on the outside of your index finger) and swirl it in a circle beside your head (like when you were seven and called someone crazy.) the deaf person normally uses the first letter of your name, which is why I have an 'a'. if your name is less than three letters long, you just sign those letters.
