Chapter 3

POV: Samantha Spano

Today is the day of the tournament. In about 1 hour we have to be registered at the front desk of the guild with Gildarts and he'll decide who faces who. The tournament to decide the top wizards. It would be fun to be one of the greats, but can I even do that? Who in their right mind would willingly challenge Erza and Mira together? Its insanity.

I'm on my way down to the guild from the dorms when my eye latches onto a target that seems familiar. His eyes scan mine for a brief second before he snaps his head back in front of him and darts away from me. I chase after him, following him around a corner where I lose track of him. The open, barren hall that I am greeted with shows no sign of the man.

I begin to trek back down to the guild after my brief detour and check in for the tournament. Gildarts hands me a white nylon bracelet that finds its way to my wrist, and latches itself together. I inspect it further to find the outline of two circles appear next to each other on the bracelet. “The white button will alert you when you are next up in the competition. It'll will emit a high pitch noise until it is clicked, revealing that you are indeed on your way to the center of the arena.”

He turns to deal with other business. “And the red button?” My voice sounds hoarse.

“Click that one when you want the match to end. It will notify the other contestants of your surrender. If you force the other team to surrender your bracelet will buzz and glow. Any attacks after a surrender will result in the loss of the point for that team. Any other questions?”

“No.” I turn away to be met with the waving hand of Cana from across the guild floor. “So how does this tournament thingy work? There are 10 teams competing right?”

She finishes her barrel of beer and speaks in a low, drunken tone. “After a team loses they aren't out of the competition, but they will be at a disadvantage. At the end of the day, the top 4 teams will get to move on to the next round.” She waves Mirajane over to bring her more to drink. “In the next round the top 4 teams will compete in a standard tournament setting, team vs team and then winning team vs winning team. The best team's wizards will win making them the top duo in Fairy Tail and giving them the cash prize.”

Cana's eyes don't light up nearly as much with the thought of the money as they do when Mirajane brings her beer over. “Do you wanna go train one more time now then? the tournament is in an hour.”

“You go, I'll meet you there.” She waves me off as she swallows down another potion of intoxication. I hope she can still compete like that. I do take her advice and head to the arena alone, maybe I can learn about who I'm facing.

Walking around the block to get the arena, once more I find myself in the presence of the strange man. He seems unaware, oblivious to his surroundings. I run up behind him and snatch the hood off of his head, stealing an up-close and personal inspection of his face. He isn't a man, he looks about 15, same as me. I catch his dark eyes that seem to pear into infinity. An endless pool of wonder lost, trapped within his eyes, hidden behind the thin frames he wears. I catch a glimpse of a scar on his upper, right hand forehead and memories floor back into my mind all at once. I take my eyes off of him and turn for a second. When I turn back, he is gone.

I continue to the arena when I am stuck with a hint of realization. That is the boy I helped when I first joined the guild. He didn't talk then, and he sure didn't talk now. My thoughts bounce off of him alternating with other various things. I think of the tournament, then of him. I think of what kind of missions I can do if I win, then of him. I think of Erza and Mirajane winning the tournament, then of him, until, I manage to force him out of my head and focus on the impending task.
