6 | SMELLS LIKE CREME PUFFS AND WINTER SKIES

their shoulders brush against each other as they make their way through the crowded hall. a comfortable silence falls over them, and they smile lightly at other students who pass by.

"brian?" brock mumbles, turning towards the pretty irish boy with a nervous look. the other boy stops walking, staring at his best friend with a dorky grin plastered onto his face. his eyes soften as they gaze upon the hesitant boy.

"yea brocky?" brian asks, looking at the boy with such a fondness that made brock swoon. he feels as if brian is playing with him like a puppet, pulling his strings and making him fall harder. the backpack on brock's shoulder slips off slowly, landing in his hand.

"i like someone," brock smiles, swearing that he sees a short moment of sadness control the other boy, until a small smile lands back on brian's face. brock swings the backpack back over his shoulder, almost hitting the other boy in the face.

"who do you like?" brian mumbles, looking up at the other boy with a soft smirk on his face.

"it's a secret," brock says between giggles, sticking out his tongue at brian. the other boy scoffs, and grabs brock's hand.

"wow, you can't even tell your best friend? that's messed up, brocky," brian smirks, dragging along the other boy so they can make it to class.

"well, i'm bisexual and i don't want-" brock quickly slaps a hand over his mouth, trying to stop the words that are flowing out of his mouth. he looks up at brian and sees a smile on the boy's face.

"that's cool. i'm pansexual," brian laughs, and brock grabs onto his hand again. he doesn't expect brian to continue talking, but he does.

"and i'm in love with you, brock"

john misses jaren more than he likes to admit.

the two boys had not hung out in a couple days, and john was dying to see the boy again. all he can think about is jaren's soft smile and hair. god, he would kill to run his hand through those locks again.

a sudden ring interrupts his thoughts. he groans, making his way down the stairs in his house. a worried look appears on his face as he sees jaren looking down with a smaller brian wrapped around his arm.

"jaren, brian, you okay?" john says, causing jaren to look up at the boy with a cautious smile on his face. brian waves at john with a sad look grazing his eyes.

"i'm just fine, but brian isn't," jaren speaks, dragging the irish man inside the house. the two boys plop down on the couch while john grabs them some snacks.

when john comes back, he finds brian sobbing heavily into jaren's shoulder. john places the bowl of mint chocolate chip ice cream in front of brian, and jaren mouths a small 'thank you' to the boy.

"how did you know that mint chocolate chip was my favorite?" brian wipes his eyes, a small sob escaping his throat as he looks at john. the blonde hair boy chuckles.

"a magician never reveals his secrets," john winks, and jaren laughs from behind brian.

the room goes silent as brian stuffs his face with the ice cream. john walks over to sit by jaren and the smaller boy puts his head onto john's shoulder.

"i've never seen brian like this...." jaren trails off, snuggling his head closer to john's neck.

"hey brian," john softly says, causing the irish boy to look at him with a mouthful of ice cream, "do you want to tell me what's wrong?"

"no," brian spits out, turning back to his ice cream bowl. john stands up, grabbing onto jaren's hand and moving closer to brian.

"listen, i know you don't want to talk about it. but nothing's going to change if you keep bottling up your emotions like this. you'll only hurt yourself."

brian looks up at john, contemplating what he just said.

"i know, john. yet, every time i don't bottle up my feelings, i just feel a world of pain after," brian huffs, and john wraps his arms around him.

"what happened, brian? please just tell us, we want to help," jaren says from behind, intertwining his fingers tightly with john.

"i told brock," brian pauses, "i told brock that i love him."

"that's great brian! you guys both love each other so much, and y'all are meant to be together. why are you so sad?" john quickly asks, watching a frown form on brian's face.

"he said he didn't feel the same."

🌂

brian sits at home, playing a new game on his computer. thunder sounds throughout his room, causing him to jump out of his seat. he gets up with a groan, glancing at his phone from across the room.

he sees multiple texts appear on his screen, curiosity taking over his mind. he checks the time.

4:23 a.m.

he's definitely not going to school tomorrow.

he picks up his phone, clicking around to get to the text message app. he sees ten from brock, and two from jaren. he clicks on jaren's name first.

milkman: hey brian, i'm glad you told us.
milkman: i'll talk to brock about it tomorrow.

he closes his messages, lightly shaking his head at his friend. he doesn't want everyone to know what happened and confronting brock could only make it worse. speaking of brock...

cutie: hey brian
cutie: listen, i really do care about you, but i don't think i'm okay with leading you on.

cutie: i told you had a crush, and then you told me how you felt.
cutie: sorry, but it sorta freaked me out.
cutie: bri, you're amazing, but i just don't feel the same.

cutie: i know it must of been hard for you to say, but i like someone else.
cutie: please don't be sad.

cutie: i hope we can still be friends.
cutie: bye.

brian throws his phone on the ground, causing the screen to shatter into pieces. he mentally curses, the glass seeping into his hands and causing him to bleed. tears stream down his face as he picks up the razor next to him.

the phone wasn't the only thing that broke that night.
