7 | IT ALWAYS COMES BACK TO HAUNT YOU

before brock has a chance to comprehend what is happening, jaren and john are already in front of him. he hasn't seen brian all day, and he is worried sick about the other boy. he can't help but wonder where the other boy went.

"brock, what the hell is wrong with you?" jaren says angrily, trying not to punch the boy in the face. john grips his hand, making sure he doesn't do anything drastic.

"what are you talking about?" brock whispers, honestly hoping that brian didn't say anything about what happened. he didn't need to be harassed by his other friends right now.

"you know what you did! we also all know that you're in love with him, so why would you reject him like that?" john bellows, pulling jaren back from the nervous boy. brock just wants to disappear.

"i'm not telling you anything," brock sneers, starting to walk away before he is pulled back by jaren.

"no, you're going to tell us right now," jaren shouts, "brian needs a reason to talk to his best friend again."

brock sits down against his locker, tears threatening to pour out of his eyes. he should've just said yes to brian, everything would have been so much simpler.

"you're right. i'm one hundred percent in love with brian. yet things can never be that easy, can they?" brock sighs, pushing back his tears.

jaren and john sit down next to him, making sure that their friend doesn't break. despite what he did, the boy still needs their support in order to speak. jaren lays his head on john's lap, looking up at the white ceiling of the school.

"i know that it's a stupid reason, but i think that brian might be better off without me dragging him down. i'm scared that one day i'm just going to explode and he'll be left to pick up my pieces," brock slams his head on the locker behind him, "we both know that no one can fix something that's already broken."

"brock, go find him. tell him you love him, because right now that's all that matters. worry about the hardships after you get together," jaren smiles up at john, the boy responding by grabbing the ends of his hair and twirling it.

brock takes a deep breath, and gets up from the ground. he nods at john, a goofy smile appearing on the boy's face.

"i guess it's time for me to get my prince charming."

👑

brock bangs on the door, hoping that brian will answer.

he had already ran five blocks to get to brian's house, and he isn't going back until he sees that beautiful boy. he bangs again, smiling to himself and blowing on his bubblegum.

tick, tock.

a mental clock goes off in brock's mind. he has been standing outside for five minutes, and has yet to receive a response from the person inside. he softly sighs, reaching under the doormat to grab the spare key that brian had told him to use in case of emergencies.

in brock's head, this is definitely an emergency.

he puts the key in and opens the door. brock quickly scans the house, trying to see where brian is. he checks all the downstairs room before he runs upstairs.

he swings open the door to brian's room, and his heart immediately drops in his stomach.

the boy has wet, matted down hair pressed to his forehead. he lays on the ground; he's passed out in a pool of blood. a small sob comes out of brock as he checks if the boy is still alive. luckily, brock is able to feel his light pulse.

he pulls out his phone, dialing a number quickly.

"i need an ambulance right now," brock pauses while wiping his tears away, "i don't think he's going to make it."

👑

john and jaren are playing video games when the phone starts to ring.

they get in the car immediately, heading to the hospital. tears stream down jaren's face in the passenger seat, and john tries to focus on the road. he can't stand to see his flower boy like this, yet he can't really do anything to help.

"jaren, it's going to be fine," john says, placing his hand on jaren's knee. jaren looks down, placing his hand on top of john's.

"but what if it isn't?" jaren asks, looking at john for a response, yet receiving nothing. the rest of the car ride is silent.

they pull up to their destination, rushing out of john's car. the cool air hits against their backs and the moonlight shines on the windows of the hospital. they get inside to see a worried brock rocking back and forth in a ball, tears streaming down his face.

"it's all my fault, it's all my fault, it's all my fault," brock continues to repeat until he sees jaren and john running up to him.

"shh brock, we got you," jaren whispers as brock crashes into his embrace, loud sobs emitting from his body, "what did the doctor say?"

"he- he's going to be f-fine," brock stutters on his words, "apparently if i had shown up any later, bri would be de-dead right now."

after a few minutes of consoling brock and talking, the doctor comes out of the backroom. jaren reads his name tag, realizing that the boy who could only be two years older than him is named luke.

"hello everyone. i would just like to let you know that brian is awake and accepting visitors. please, only one at a time though."

after the doctor speaks, brock tells him that he is going in. luke leads him through a series of halls before stopping outside room 332, and putting in a key. brock follows the doctor into the room.

brock sees brian on the bed, and immediately springs into action. he pulls brian into a hug, crying onto the boy's shoulder.

"bri, don't ever do that again, i was worried sick about you," brock sobs, holding onto brian tighter, "this is all my fault, and i know it's true."

"brocky, come on, it isn't all your fault. i shouldn't have done something like that," brian whispers, rubbing circles onto the other boy's back.

"i should have just told you the truth. i should have told you that i have had a crush on you since third grade. i should have told you that i was fucking in love with you then, and i'm still in love with you now."

brock finishes his sentence, staring up at the boy in the bed. brian moves his arms down to wrap around brock's waist, and brock throws his hands around brian's neck.

brian lets out a small chuckle, "this may not be the most romantic place for our first kiss, but i can't wait any longer."

and as the moonlight reflects off the windows, brian closes the gap between their lips.
