The next morning
I awoke to the alarm on my phone going off. I quickly turned it off so I wouldn’t wake up Kate. I hadn’t gotten too much sleep that night with the nurses that kept coming in and with my worry for Kate. I knew I had to leave so I quickly wrote her a little note saying that I didn’t want to disturb her sleep, that she should text me when she woke up, that I loved her, and would see her after school. I kissed her on the forehead and left her to sleep.
It was about 5:30 am. I had to get up so early so I could go home maybe take a quick shower and get ready for school. I got to my car and sent Lisa a text saying that I just left Kate but she was still sleeping and didn’t look like she would be getting up anytime soon. I started my car; I had a friend drop it off for me yesterday, and started to make my way home. When I got to my house, I ran up to my room saw I had time for a quick shower so I went ahead and got one. When I got out I quickly bushed my teeth and got dressed for work. I didn’t have time to pack a lunch so I checked my wallet to make sure I had enough money to buy some food. I grabbed an apple to eat in the car.
It was 6:30 when I got out to my car. It took me about half an hour to get to school with traffic, and I normally get there half an hour before the homeroom bell rings, so I was right on time.
When I got to school I walked to the office first to check my mailbox. There was a note saying that there was a teacher’s meeting during homeroom, in the library, which I needed to attend. I looked at the secretary, “Do you know what this is about?”
“No clue, sorry.” She said.
“No, it’s fine. I was just wondering.” And I walked out the door toward my classroom. I knew I needed to talk with Chrissy but I knew she normally doesn’t get here until right before the bell rings, because Kate was always complaining about that. I got to my classroom and dropped my stuff down. I had to get to Chrissy before someone else told her. Then I remembered I had her number in my phone, because Kate had forgotten her phone one time and called Chrissy from mine.
I quickly searched my contacts until I found her’s. I sent her a quick text saying, “Chrissy, it’s me Eric. I need to talk to you ASAP. Please come straight to my room when you get to school please. Thanks.” After that was done I started to make sure I had everything I needed ready for the day.
I wasn’t paying attention to the time, and jumped when I heard a knock at the door. “Come in.” I said from my desk, where I was setting things up on my computer. Chrissy walked in. “Oh good. It’s you.” She gave me a funny look. “Please sit down.”
“Mr. Winter, did I fail my test or something?”
“No. You didn’t fail. And right now, since no one is around, you can call me Eric.”
“I’ll stick with Mr. Winter. I don’t want to slip up.”
“Okay. Whatever.”
“Why am I here? Since, I didn’t fail anything.”
“Actually, I have some bad news. And Kate wanted me to tell you, since she couldn’t tell you herself.”
Her face fell, “Wh.. What’s wrong?” she asked.
“Well, Kate and I were in a car accident yesterday. I’m fine, but she wasn’t as lucky. She is in the hospital right now. She is okay and she will make a full recovery.”
“Oh my god! What? How? What about the baby?”
“The baby is fine. Kate has a broken leg, a sprained ankle, a broken hand, and several stitches in her arm and on her head, she is very bruised, but some how the baby made it out perfectly fine. And Kate is going to make a full recovery, and the only reason she is still in the hospital is so they can monitor the baby, and because she can’t walk until her sprained ankle heals and then she can use crutches.”
