Being at home is weird. I can’t do much. It’s not what I expected. My mom stays home with me in the mornings and is gradually giving me more time to myself by leaving for work earlier and earlier. Eric comes after school and stays with me which is the only reason my mom goes to work. It’s also weird because I can’t move around unless someone is home, so I’m basically stuck on the couch. Since my hand is still healing I’m not able to push myself in the wheelchair so I have to have someone help me move and get in the chair.
Luckily though I am able to keep up with school, teachers drop by with tests and quizzes, which is really weird but at least I’ll graduate on time. Eric has also been a huge help any time I get stuck on something and as a support system. I’m ready to back to school but at the same time I’m not. I’m ready to get the year over with and get my life back to normal but I’m not ready for everyone to stare at me because I’m pregnant and because when I go back I’m going to be on crutches. I just want it to be summer and for Eric and I to start our lives together, too bad I have 6 more months.
“Honey I’m home.” Eric says jokingly as he walks into the house.
“I’m in here.” I call out. “How was your day at work?” I ask when he enters the room.
He leans down to kiss me as he answers, “Fine. And what did you do all day?”
“Well I cleaned the house and baked all day just for you.” I joke keeping up with the ‘60s family routine, like you always see in old movies or tv shows. He just starts laughing not able to keep going.
“No really what did you do today?” he asks.
“What do you think I did? I sat on the couch all day.” I say.
“I’m sorry.” He says looking upset. I know he still kind of blames himself for the accident.
“Honey, it’s not your fault. It was that crazy ex-girlfriend’s fault. Stop blaming yourself.” I say looking deep into his eyes.
“I know. But”
I cut him off, “No buts, I don’t want to hear it. Now lets talk about something else. I know. So I was thinking about the baby today.”
“mmhhmm” he says looking intrigued. “What about the baby?”
“Well you know soon we will be able to find out the sex of the baby and I was wondering if we wanted to know or keep it a surprise?”
“What do you want to do?” he asks.
“Nope. I asked you first.”
“Not fair.”
“Totally fair! Now go.” I say satisfied. I know this is kind of a big decision and I want his opinion before I tell him mine.
“Ok. But if I have a different opinion then you we will discuss it and figure out what we want together right?”
“Of course.”
“Ok… I want…” he says and I can tell he is skeptical. “it to be a surprise…” he says in an unsure voice but I can tell it’s what he really wants.
“Really?” I ask keep all emotion from my voice and face.
“Yes.” He says more sure of himself.
“Great! Because that’s what I want too!” I say with a smile as his face lights up.
He gives me a hug and says, “Well that was easier then I thought it would be.”
“Now for the hardest part.” I say. He gives me a funny look. “Now we have to pick out names.”
“Well I think we need to talk about a last name before we talk about a first name.” he says.
I sit there and think, “I’ve never even given the last name a thought. I always assumed it would be Winter and eventually we’d all have the same last name.” I said honestly.
“That was my thoughts too, I just wanted to make sure we were all on the same page.”
“Good, you scared me for a second.”
“Why? I think I have more reason to be scared.”
“Well I guess I don’t know. It doesn’t matter as long as we are all on the same page, which we are.”
We sat around throwing names at each other some were shot down right away, others were on a maybe list, but none sounded just right. We knew we wouldn’t pick a name in one day we would need time to think of names and time to say ok before we finally picked. We finally had to get out a pad of paper and write which ones we were considering, which ones we really liked, and how we were going to spell it if he picked it. We were just getting ready to take a break when my mom walked through the door.
We decided we weren’t even going to tell my mom until we knew what names we wanted first.
“Hey what are you guys doing?” she asked.
“Baby names.” I said.
“Can I hear?” she asked excited.
“Nope we are waiting until we pick a name first, then you’ll be the first to know.”
“Ok. Ok. I respect that.” She said.
We all sat and talked while my mom, with a little help from Eric, made dinner and we ate and watched a movie before Eric went home.
