"Adrianna," Mitchell said softly, "Maybe you can do me a favour and tell me what's going on."

I looked at Mitchell. It wasn't hatred that was in his eyes, but hurt.

"Mitchell," I started but Devion cut me off.

"Adrianna is seventeen. She can make decisions for herself."

"Is that what you want?" Mitchell whispered. "You don't want me telling you what's right and wrong?"

"No." I stumbled forward. "Please, listen to my explanation."

"Adrianna." Devion said pulling at my arm.

"No!" I shook Devion's hand free. "Devion, just get out of here, please." I added.

Devion stepped back. Without another word he got into his car and drove off. I bet he was mad at me.

I turned around to face Mitchell.

"Are you mad at me?" I asked in a small voice.

Mitchell didn't move but still stood rigid in the same position. I reached out to take his hand. He cringed away from me as if I was toxic. Pain rose in my chest.

"Answer my question, Adrianna. Do you find me a pest?" He asked.

"No." Tears formed in my eyes. I never imagined the thought of losing him. "Please listen to me."

"And what?" His expression was blank. "You're just going to tell me another lie and being the stupid little boy I am I'm going to believe it."

"No." Slowly, one by one, tears began to fall from my eyes.

"Then you tell me. What am I suppose to do?" Mitchell whispered quietly. "Can't you see this is hurting me? You pretend like you love me and then when I turn around, you're making out with another guy. I bet you didn't even miss me while I was in Eryos."

"But I did." I said. "Mitchell, I don't want to lose you, ever."

"Adrianna, you can't pick the both of us and I see that you've already made your decision, and it's him."

"No, please listen to me." I said franticly, "I didn't mean for things to turn out this way."

"Do you know why I hate Devion so much?"

I shook my head.

"Devion killed my brother." Mitchell murmured.

"No, that's not true." I said. Devion might have an attitude, but he wasn't the type to kill unreasonably.

"Two years ago I was assigned to execute a bunch of demons in an area with a group of three other guardians. Riley chose to come along with the group. He was twelve then. Because of another attack further away, I went over there. I should have chosen to stay with Riley, but the group said they'll protect him. The demon outbreak was larger than we anticipated. When I came back, Riley was dead and only a single member remained. We had to call for backup. Vladimir happened to be there. He didn't lift a single finger to help him. He said it wasn't his fault that stupid guardians get themselves killed. Riley wasn't a full guardian yet, he was just a child. He watched as my brother died. Never in my life can I forgive that fucking bastard!"

"No, that can't be true." I whispered.

"You better believe it." Mitchell said. "It's the truth."

"I'm so sorry." I said gently.

"Don't be. It's not your fault, it was Vladimir's. No you see why all this time I've been trying to keep you away from him. You're just going to get your heart broken for someone that's not worth it."
