DEAR LIVIA,

Before I left, I made you a promise. I promised that I'll write you letters. I promised that I'll write about every country I visit. I promised you that I'll find myself. You may not be reading this, or you might be-- if you are, I just want you to know that I never intended on breaking my promises. I may not have written to you continuously, or at all in this matter, but I did write you letters. I wrote you many. But I never had the courage to send them.

I'll admit, I was scared. I still am, because I don't know whether or not you're reading this, though I really hope you are. I need you to hear me out, not just for my sake, but for yours. I need you to know that I don't blame you for anything. I need you to know that I didn't mean a single spiteful word that was said that dreadful day. I didn't mean to hurt you.

I'm sorry, Livia. I'm sorry for hurting you. I'm sorry for making you loose your trust in me. I'm sorry for reminding you of your life back in England. Though I'm not sorry for befriending you, much to your distaste. I'm not sorry for getting to know you. I'm not sorry.

But I did keep this promise in a way. In every country that I visited, I wrote a letter describing each and every one, just like you wanted me to. You may have thought this promise will never arrive, though I must say they were somewhat delayed.

I hope you can find the will to forgive me and hear me out through these letters, as any of this would not have happened if it weren't for you, Livia Crawford. And perhaps the next time you'll receive any letters over than these, I'll be there to deliver them personally.

Yours sincerely,

GILBERT BLYTHE.

DEAR LIVIA,

Brazil is a truly beautiful country, I'm sure that you'd fall in love with it with a single glance, just as I. It is so different to what I expected it to be-- warm weather wherever you go, mouth-watering spices to be smelt in every market, and there isn't a day where I wouldn't hear some kind of cultural music, and I have to say it's far better than anything Avonlea has to offer.

It's a tropical country, and I must say it isn't anything either of us are used to. Instead of woods behind their houses they have rain forests. Instead of robins or blackbirds they have macaws, the most vibrant colored birds you can imagine-- they are wonderful to look at.

As this is my first destination, I'm happy to say that I am in no way disappointed with what this country has to offer. I'm going to cherish these next few days I have to spend here before I get back on that ship and go God knows where, but I guess that's the thrill: I don't know what's in store, and I have to say that I don't mind that in the slightest.
